Organized Athletic Training
Pays Off At Killeen Base
In recent months SWU Company
at Killeen Base has been getting
a taste of West Point athletic train
ing and while the program has
been at times rugged it neverthe
less has paid off handsomely.
As an ex-West Pointer Lt. Col
onel Alfred L. Toth the unit's com
mander bfelieves that the program
used by the Army Military Aca
demy to put its athletes into top
physical fitness can in part be
aptly used to the same advantage
at Killeen Base. To the athletes
participating in his program he
has even applied the title of "Black
Knights" a name traditionally as
sociated with West Point.
Col. Toth feels that an athletic
program to be effective must be
rhythmically regular vigorous and
comprehensive. For this reason
the Black Knights have a regular
schedule of athletic training in
which every man in the unit par
ticipates.
And for all their efforts effi
ciency and enthusiasm the Black
Knights rank among the leading
contenders for the Killeen Base
Commander's Tropny given an
nually to the unit with the out
standing athletic achievements.
Essentially Col. Toth's nor
mal athletic period consists of

15 minutes of calisthenics for
warm-up followed by 45 min-
utes of organized intramural or
varsity sports. Climaxing the
day's workout is a one-mile run
for each enlisted man and
officer under 35 years of age.
The intramural and varsity
teams are minutely organized to
be competitive. Each team has 8
captain or leader who is chosen
not by rank but by athletic ability.
For instance Pfc James Preston
who was largely responsible for
the unit's fine showing in the Kay-
bee Intramural Basketball League
this past season is a team lead
er.
Each intramural activity is
scored during scheduled periods
and these scores are kept cumu
latively on a master bulletin board
reserved solely for athletic events
and scores. This practice stimu
lates interest and encourages com
petition among the players. Each
team has a designated specialist
whose job is to instruct team mem
bers in the finer points of a given
sport.
An active interest in the Black
Knights has been aroused on the
Base and a measure of the effect
iveness of this program can be
gained by the large spectator turn-1
