Mid-East Crisis Background
Poverty Main Factor
Behind Arab Tension
Of all the causes of unrest and
revolt in the Middle East the
most serious and deep-rooted is
the poverty of the great majority
of
Arabs.
An important factor in the po
verty of the Arab peasant is the
feudal system of land ownership
which keeps the sharecropping
farmers in constant debt to the
landlords. Few Arab peasants
have as much as $100 a year in
income.
At the other end of the scale
is a small but very wealthy upper
class and in between a thin but
rapidly expanding segment of mid-
dleclass Arabs.
Much of the current unrest
and instability in the Middle East
is rooted in the lower class' bitter
discontent with its lot and its de
mands for a better life. Because
of this discontent the class tends
to rally to any leader who prom
ises it better conditions.
Another contributing factor to
tension in the area is oil.
NOTE!
Although the Middle East is
rich in oil not all of the arab
states have oil. Only Saudi
Arabia the sheikdoms of the
Arabian Peninsula and Iraq
produce oil in quantity.
With Western help the former
Iraq government had started to
carry out an ambitious progres
sive program for the development
of the country to which it was
devoting 70 per cent of the oil
revenue. In time the mass of
Iraqis would be likely to see the
benefits from the long-range pro
gram.
The Middle East supplies three-
fourths of Western European oil
needs. Egypt Syria and Lebanon
while not oil producers are coun
tries through which Middle East
oil passes on its way to the Medi
terranean.
The Suez Canal in Egypt and
the pipelines from Saudi Arabia
and Iraq to the coasts of Lebanon
and Syria are the arteries for the
oil that is the lifeblood of Europe.

Guide To Guided Missiles
Like Tour Of Disneyland
New York (AFPS) If you
hear a goose honk a rat squeak
a hound dog bay a bullpup growl
or a sidewinder rattle don't
get all shook up. t'sp robably our
defense family of missiles and
rockets sounding off.
For the fact is that in terms of
nomenclature that family is rap
idly becoming a menagerie. The
idea seems to be that if it zooms
it rates a zoological appelation.
And of course the Army also
has the Hawk an air defense
weapon capable of destroying
attackers flying at the lowest
altitudes. But it's the Navy
and the Air Force that really
go for broke in naming their
guided missiles and rockets.
The Navy has its Sidewinder
desert rattlesnake) its Petrel
Terrier its Sparrow I and I
its Bullpup and its Rat.
The Air Force has its Falco
its Hound Dog its Green Qua
its Bull Goose and its Snark.
(As for the Snark there simply
ain't no such animal. It was in
vented by Lewis Carroll the
"Alice in Wonderland" man.)
When they lose interest in
birds and beasts the resource
ful services are apt to go off
on a mythological kick es
pecially the Army which is
prone to an Olympian view of
its new weapons. Witness
Nike-Altas and the Jupiter
IRBM. Not to be outdone the
Air Force has its Atlas its
Thor and and its Titan. And in
a moment of truth as far
back as 1950 the Air Force
came ihto the ring with
Matador.
