PFC Mullins works in the Fort
Hood Training Aids Center. A
professional illustrator he work
ed for Television station KOMO

Army in July of 1960.
The 23-year-old Washingtonian
claims to have little formal back
ground in art or his other love
photography in which he indulges
as darkroom instructor on week
nights and weekends at the Fort
Hood Arts aid Craft Center.
At KOMO-TV in Seattle he
served as assistant art direct
or doing much of the art
work on background scenes.
He later studied for hr

local Northwest area artist.
His study at the Museum was
on a scholarship basis the schol
arship being offered to profession
al people who didn't have time to
go to school and who were offered
the opportunity to study with the
Museum as long as they wished
once their portfolios had been
studied.
The Seattle artist took basic
training at Fort Ord Cal. and
came to Fort Hood in December
of 1960. He graduated from Kent
Meridian Senior High School
Kent Wash. and immediately
went into the professional illus
trator field.
His work on the supplement

A Fort Hood soldier is getting
the opportunity to advance him
self in his chosen field of en
deavor.
Sp5 Billy Crider Hdq. Co. 66th
Armor 2d Armored Division en
tered' the Army after serving
with the National Cash Register
Company in Dayton Ohio as a
welder. Now Crider is the batta
lion welder with the 66th and
finds that he has learned how to
improvise to get the job done.
Says Crider "I'm using basically
the same type of equipment that
I used in civilian life but I've
learned some short cuts and im
provisations that have helped
me."
Crider completed his basic train
ing at Fort Knox and also took
his advanced training there.
Crider also took the initiative to
complete his high school educa
tion at Fort Hood and praised
the Army for giving him the op
portunity to do so.

minute detail to identify different
models of tanks and weapons. He
usually works from photographs
of actual weapons and has a com
prehensive knowledge of various
types of tanks and other weap
ons including airplanes which
he can describe in detail both
verbally and through his talented
hands.
A commercial artist sidelining
in photography his art work is
outstanding and from the front
cover to the back a real fine job
on the artwork has been done by
him.

73rd Artillery Battalion's op
eration sergeant Weldon C. Har
ris was recently promoted to Mas
ter-Sergeant E-8.
Sergeant Harris entered the
Army November 1944 at Whit
ney Texas and has been sta
tioned in Italy Germany and Ja
pan.
The World War II veteran with
almost seventeen years of Army
service has a total of 120 months
overseas duty.
His awards include the Bronze
Star World War II Victory Med
al European Theater of Opera
tions Good Conduct and National
Defense.
Sgt. Harris resides with his
wife Ruth and two children :n
Killeen.

Capt. Crowley Is
New 1st AD AG
An ex"Flying Tiger" Capt. Tol
E. Crowley is the new adjutant
general of CCA 1st Armored Di
vision.
A veteran of 25 years of mili
tary life his first contact with the
service was the Texas National
Guard which he joined in 1936.
Serving with the NG for four
years he was called to active
duty at the beginning of World
War II.
After basic training Capt.
in he A A
Corps and served with the fam
ous 14th Air Force "Flying Ti
gers" as an enlisted pilot and
gunner.
He stayed with the Tigers
throughout the war in China
and returned to the U. S. in
1945.
Prior to his departure for the
states he was presented the Chi
nese Flying Cloud and Banner by
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-S he k.
This is the highest award pre
sented to a foreign national by
the Chinese Nationalist Govern
ment.
With the Korean conflict in pro
gress Capt. Crowley was again
called to active duty and sent to
the 29th Infantry Regiment on
Okinawa. Later he joined the 24th
Infantry Division in Korea.
Cessation of the Korean war

commanding officer of 4119
Army Service Unit (ASU) and
post special services officer
at White Sands N. M.
During his varied career other

Truck Contracts
The Army has awarded two
contracts totalling $34744432 for
trucks to Chrysler Corporation of
Detroit Michigan.
One contract for $26565932
covers production of 7453 three-
quarter ton trucks used for cargo
and ambulance purposes. The sec
ond contract in the amount of $3-
178500 covers procurement of
1050 one-ton trucks a commercial
type vehicle.
Work on both contracts will be
performed at "the Dodge Truck
Plant Warren Michigan a labor
surplus area.
More than 300 Michigan and
out-of-state supplier firms most
of them in the small business cate
gory are expected to benefit
from the contracts.
Both contract awards were
made by the Detroit Michigan
Ordnance District.
Southern European Task Force
(SETAF) assistant adjutant of
Ordnance Office and chief of pre-
sonnel section 2d Armored Divi-
son.
Capt. Crowley attended John
Tarlton Agricultural College at
Stephenville Texas and majored
in aeronautical engineering at
Texas A&M.
In November 1947 he was
commissioned a second lieu
tenant in the Infantry and lat
er transferred to the Adjutant
General branch.
His awards include the Distin
guished Flying Cross Army Com
mendation Medal Bronze Star
and the Air Medal with three oak
leaf clusters.
Capt. Crowley resides with his
wife Janie and children at 812
Carrie Ave. Killeen.

He is married and has two chil
dren presently residing in Germ
