Program Underway
To Reduce Decay
A program aimed at reriucin
decay in teeth of both adults and
children has been initiated by the
Dental Corps at Fort Hood who
have issued notes on the impor
tance of oral hygiene and pre
ventive dentistry.
which stated s'mply is mouth
cleanliness and is important be
cause it can mean the difference
between keeping your own nat
ural teeth or losing them at an
early age.
Oral hygiene is important at any
age but more so under 30 years
of age. The permanent teeth be-
g'n to come in at the age of 6
and until about the age of 30 the
teeth are extremely susceptible to
decay.
A topical fluoride program has
been instituted here at Ford Hood
and steps are being taken to in
sure an adequate fluoride level
iii the drink'ng water. This is a
great factor in reducing decay in
Die teeth of children.
What is a topical fluoride treat
ment? The treatment consists of
first pol'shing the teeth and then
applying a mild solution of stan
nous fluoride to one section of the
mouth at a time and allowing the
solution to remain on the teeth
for approximately four minutes.
It is a painless and harmless pro
cedure although the material
does have a slight bitter taste
A single application of stannous
|fluoride once each year reduces
dental decay. This along with the
use of a toothpaste containing fluo
ride" and the proper care of the
mouth will be very effective in
reducing the rate of dental decay.
