along with many of his fellow infantrymen is practicing and
studying for the Expert Infantryman Badge test to be held by
the division in February. The bayonet assault course will be
just one of the 16 parts of the test for the coveted badge. (U.S.

'Spy In Sky' Set
To Take Photos
During Workout
The 2d Armored Division's spy
in the sky will zoom over North
Fort Hood Friday when the 502d
Aviation Co. gives its surveil
lance drones a workout.
A 15-square-mile chunk of Fort
Hood will be photographed inch
by inch by the gasoline-powered
USD-1 radio-controlled drcne on
realistic combat missions.
The surveillance missions are
part of a class for the 502d's
radar and drone specialists who
due to modifications resulting
from scientific and mechanical
developments must take periodic
refresher training.
Sgt. Miles A. McArthur of the with no foreknowledge of what is
division aerial surveillance sec
tion will be in charge of the train-
ing and will control the drones
in flight. He said the drones will
photograph from altitudes up to
5000 feet. Although its exact
speed is classified it is reported
to reach speeds of several hun-
ared miles per hour.
In a real combat situation the
commander should get clear
close-up pictures of the enemy's
territory without endangering his
own personnel.
The area for Friday's training
borders West Range Road in the
Fire Techniques Range area.
Sergeant McArthur said that if
the weather holds out four flights
will be made. After each flight
is completed the drone's camera
is unloaded new film is placed
in it and the exposed film is
taken to a laboratory for analysis.
The 502d Aviation Co. has its
own photo specialists and can
process its own film even in
combat.

m-
phases of the infantryman's
duties" stated Capt. William B.
Holloway 1st Brigade assistant
S-3 officer.
"The companies in the 1st Bn.
52d Infantry have been moving
their men out in formation at a
jog about twice a week" stated
M-Sgt. Ernest W. Dickman oper
ations sergeant of the 1st Bn.
52d Infantry. "They move out as
far as they can for 30 minutes
and then they return in 30 min
utes. A man straggling a half
mile behind is out the men must
stay in formation" Dickman
said.
The test will be used as a di
vi on a in in in O
Ironsides and all officers and men
with the eligible MOSEs will take
part. Beginning Feb. 25 each of
the seven eligible battalions will
be tested one battalion a week.
"The length of the test will be
about five days" said Captain
Holloway. "The test will go on
at a fast clip. About the only
break a man will get is his lunch
hour."
"Much of the test will be under
simulated combat conditions"
Captain Holloway said. "Men will
be placed in combat situations
to happen to see how he reacts.
If he has the correct knowledge
he will react correctly" he went
on.
"We had to walk and jog walk
and jog" commented Sergeant
Dickman remembering his own
experience during the 12-mile
march of his EIB test. Sergeant
Dickman holds both the Combat
Infantryman Badge given to 'i-
fantrymen in combat as well as
the EIB.
It is not an easy test regard
less of military experience. The
EIB candidate has been told that
he must study and condition him
self. But most of all to win the
right to wear the rifle on the
blue background as the EIB
holder put it "You really have
to want that badge."
