the 16th Engineers were formed
at Fort Knox Ky. he had 46
men and was commander of
three companies as well as bat

Harley W. Ladd commander.
Another officer was S-4 officer
an an of he
three companies in the battalion.
Then they received 1200 raw re

Colonel Ladd pointed out that
General Clarke not only had to
build up and train a batta
lion of new men but had to
organize an engineer battalion for
one of the first armored Divi

"General Clarke's original de
sign of the six-company engineer
battalion is now the standard
throughout the Army" stated
Colonel Ladd. "We can do just
about any job we are given un
der this setup."
Colonel Ladd said "He men
tioned that in those days you
had to be a qualified motorcycle
