1863 a formal United States Ar
my Signal Corps was established.
Through the Civil War and up
to World War I the corps em
ployed many new communica
tions advancements such as tele
graph telephone radio and ela
borate wire and radio circuits.
During this period the corps
was given the responsibility of the
nation's first weather service
which it kept until 1891.
The use of aircraft in the
military was begun by the Signal
Corps and led to the establish
ment of its Aeronautical Divi
sion. This has developed into
what we now know as the United
States Air Force.
From World War I to the pre
sent growth in the corps has
been characterized by such de
velopments as radar electronic
warfare weather satellites and air
defense.
It has been very active in re
search and development of the
missile and satellite programs of
the National Aeronautics an

EAST HWY. 190
As he drew the new M-14
NATO rifle S-Sgt. William R.
Moltz 58th Infantry 2d Armored
Division reflected on nearly 20
years of his life with an old
friend the M-l.
It was before NATO was born.
The United Nations had not yet
arisen from the ashes of Presi
dent Wilson's proposed League of
Nations.
The M-l had not yet been is
sued When Sergeant Moltz came
into the Army Sept. 10 1941
about three months before the
U. S. went to war.
At basic training he was given
the .30 caliber .03 Springfield ri
fle at Camp Roberts Calif. It
was a bolt action rifle fed by a
five-round band similar to a
clip.
"We homesick recruits thought
five rounds were a lot to be play
ing with out on the KD range" he
recalled.
Then came the bombing of
Pearl Harbor and World War II
The ex-recruits were rushed to
the 17th Infantry 7th Division at
Santa Rosa Calif. Two weeks aft
er the bombing the squad leader
told Sergeant Moltz to report to
the supply sergeant.
In the supply room he signed
for a new mysterious weapon
that did not even have a bolt.
They called it the M-l or the
Grand .30 caliber rifle.

Days Of Garand
"Nobody knew much about it
since they had never seen one
before" he said. But it wasn't
long before Sergeant Moltz be
gan a long working association
with the rifle that he now calls
"the World War II doughboys'
best friend."
It was Moltz' best friend not
only during WW II but during
the Korean Conflict as well.
"What I will always remember
about the M-l is that is will hit
anything you aim at with your
naked eye. Both friend and foe
have learned to respect the ac
curacy and speed of the M-l"
he said.
Ejie to a break in service aft
er World War II Sergeant Moltz
will retire in September ofl.964.
