1st AD Heads Reenlistee List
The 1st Armored Division topped the list of reenlistees this
week with 25 Old Ironsides men signing for another tour of duty
in i'he Army
III Corps and Fort Hood non-divisional units placed second
with 12 reenlistees and the 2nd Armored Division re-upped nine
soldiers during the week.

The assignment of a new Of
ficer Candidate School grad
uate as Brigade Communica
tions officer culminated a se
ries of staff changes for the
2nd Armored Division's 3rd
Brigade.
Lt. James R. Densman (Kil-
gore Tex.) came to the Ghost
Brigade directly from the In
fantry Officer Candidate School
at Fort Benning Ga.
His assignment closely pre
ceded by the arrival of a new
S-3 or operations officer. Maj.
Donald J. Pegel (Menasha
Wis.) formerly executive offi
cer of the 3rd Bn. 66th Armor
who moved up to the 3rd Bri
gade at the beginning of April.
Major Pagel has served tours
in both Korea and Germany
and has attended the Com
mand and General Staff Col
lege.
In March Capt. Arson W.
Borst (Indio Calif.) began
work as the adjutant of the 3rd
Brigade. He had previously
been the brigade S-2.

Two decades ago spring was
coming to the German country
side. But it was not the peace
ful spring that today graces
the Central Texas area and
Fort Hood.
World War II was in its death
throes.
The 2nd Armored Division
had just completed la drive
from the Rhine to the Elbe
River. In this drive it had cap
tured 45000 prisoners and cov
ered a linear distance of 250
miles.
Countless factories were seiz
ed and innumerable prisoners
and forced laborers were lib-

The Hell On Wheels Division
under the command of Maj.
Gen. I. D. White attempted to
set up military government in
1st Brigade Holds
Reaction MTEX
The second of the four major
1st Armored Division com
mands the 1st Brigade "Fore
runners" underwent its mobili
ty test exercise (MTEX) re
hearsal this week.
The Forerunners exercised
their ready reaction tactics in
preparing for rail movement to
any location at a moment's no
tice. Attached to the 1st Bri
gade were the 1st Bn. 73rd Ar
tillery 1st Bn. 6th Artillery
Troop C 1st Squadron 1st Cav
alry and several small medi
cal and engineer detachments.
The 1st Brigade command
ed by Col. Charles A. Cannon
Jr. (Covinton Ga.) is com
posed of the 5th Bn. 6th In
fantry 1st Bn. 81st Armor and
the 2nd Bn. 81st Armor.
The rehearsal entailed the
loading of all integral equip
ment but no actual movement
was affected. Correct loading
procedures and rapid reaction
to orders given by the ev&lua
tion team were the basic

evaluators that offer construc
tive criticism to the units dur
ing their MTEX rehearsals.

Support Command. He succeeds
Lt. Col. Marion Albright in the
post. Colonel Edwards is a 1946
graduate of the United States

Captain Wood was graduated
from Central State College
Wilberforce Ohio in 1959 with
a bachelor of science degree in
accounting. He went through
the Army ROTC program at
Central State and was commis
sioned a second lieutenant upon
graduating.
The Old Ironsides officer an
avid sports buff has competed
in football baseball and track.

In less than 48 hours the di
vision had wiped out a desper
ation force of the best the Naz
is had left to offer.
On April 22 the Iron Deuce
was once again able to settle
down to military government
of the area.
A few skirmishes occurred
and more prisoners were taken.
The division had to deal with
a flurry of subversive activi
ties but for all practical pur
poses the war was over for the
Hell On Wheels.
The battle that had begun in
North Africa continued on to
Sicily then to Normandy and
across Europe to the German
homeland was finished.
The division Was to maintain
military government until ear
ly May. VE Day was at hand.
