YCAA (Youth and Community Activities) ath
letics department has announced that the drawing
for the Midget baseball teams will be delayed until
May 16.
Coaches are drastically needed for the Midget ball
players and the call has gone out from YCAA. Every
sporting season coaches are needed to fulfill the all
important role of instructing the boys on the how's
and don'ts of the sport.
All personnel interested in helping to coach or
assist a full-time coach in preparing a Midget League
team for boys 8 9 and 10 should contact the YCAA
in Building 425 or call OV5-2648.
A few weeks ago several years of sporting events
taking place at Fort Hood were reviewed. The wide
variety of sports and their acceptance by the soldiers
now range from ping-pong to triatholon.
Checking back in past Armored Sentinels the
sporting events seem much as they do today except of
course larger numbers of fans and participants are
now involved.
Twelve years ago today the headlines in the Senti
nel read "Track and Field Meet Set" "Audience
Thrilled By Boxing At North Hood" and "501st MP's
Win Opener."
May 9 1953 marked the beginning of the Fort
Hood Track and Field competition for personnel
assigned to Fort Hood. The winning top athletes would
participate in the Fourth Army Trials scheduled at a
later date.
All personnel stationed at Fort Hood Killeen
Base and Gray Air Force base were eligible to com
pete in the Post and Fourth Army Meet provided all
training and participation in these events were per
formed after scheduld training hours.
AN ESTIMATED CROWD of 500 soldiers and
Gatesville civilians made up the largest sports audience
since North Fort Hood's reactivation when they viewed
a 12-bout boxing show at the Fieldhouse Arena.
The 73rd Armored Field Artillery Bn. boxing
team continued its excellent record by winning 4 out
of 5 bouts for a season grand total of 17 wins out of
20 matches.
