New Tent Used
During Exercise
Silver Hand
At first glance then hard
look it looks like a small-scale
airplane hangar but for Army
veterans participating in a ma
jor field exercise on and near
Fort Hood the inflatable plastic
tent used by a headquarters
planning staff offers a kind of
"end of the rainbow" to a
doughboy's dream.
Erectable by an air-pressure
machine in 45 minutes this new
kind of 52-foot "tent" at the
hilltop headquarters of the U.S.
Strike Command's joint task
force staff near Burnet is high
enough to comfortably accom
modate a small elephant. The
20-foot-wide tent can be extend
ed to any desired length by
utilizing 13-foot sections. At the
front entrance it looks for all the
world like the mouth of a tun
nel.
Used for the first time by the
Strike Command during Joint
Exercise Silver Hand the tent
was designed by the Army as a
missile maintenance shed and
is manufactured by Natick Lab
oratories Natick Mass. Its
erection at Burnet offered
many service personnel their
first opportunity to see this
highly modern piece of field
equipment.
And while it tooks like a tun
nel from the outside it also
feels like a tunnel from the in
side.
Windowless the missile han
gar provides a set of field quar
ters which will fairly approxi
mate the comfort of a perma
nent structure.

THE ARMORED SENTINEL FORT HOOD TEXAS?
Maj. Richard J. Preuss (Es
mond N.D.) has issued over
$37500000 in cash and checks to
members of the 1st Armored Di
vision since taking over as di-
vison finance officer in October
of 1963. "Each month we pay
out approximately $1250000 in
cash and the same amount in
checks to Old Ironsides sol
diers" said Major Preuss.
The division finance section is
one of the busiest and most im
portant supporting units within
Old Ironsides'Not only does the
finance section issue monthly
payments to soldiers but it also
processes all incoming and out
going records handles all re-
enlistment pay and all special
actions such as allotments and
tax actions.
Five military pay teams and
three computing teams with a
total staff of 104 people make
up the Old Ironsides Finance
section. Major Preuss inaugu
rated an audit section in Janu
ary of this year to further in
sure that all 1st AD personnel
were being paid correctly and
on time. The audit section is
made up of personnel taken
from the finance teams and it
is their responsibility to check
over all on file and incoming and
outgoing records to insure their
validity.
The 1st AD Finance Officer
has started a new policy that
may be commonly used Army-
wide in the near future. The

Major Preuss feels "it is a very
worthy practice." The finance
officer forwarded a suggestion
to Department of the Army out
lining their accrued leave state
ment policy under the newly

Awards Program. "If the Army
accepts our idea" commented
Major Preuss "I feel that our
section would be doing every
individual soldier a favor by
letting him know exactly how
much leave he has accrued."

listed man who served with the
