Sgt. Maj. James W. Matting

Major Mattingly was serving
Old Ironsides as communica

Today marks the 20th an

truck accident. He died just
minutes before the ambulance
arrived and to this day I have

A four-week cfourse in combat

and crafts came to a close as
Maj. Gen. H. J. Jablonsky 1st
Armored Division commander
addressed a graduating class of
35 soldiers from Old Ironsides'
1st Brigade.
For most Americans May 7
1945 was a joyous day for they
realized that the long and bit
terly fought World War II was
drawing to a close. Sergeant
Major Mattingly was part of
the initial 1st AD landing force
that hit the beaches in North
Africa in November of 1942
and in the three years that
followed fought their way from
Africa up through Italy to the
Swiss border.
The sergeant major enlisted
in the Army in November 1940
and was sent to Fort Knox
Ky. and the 1st AD. He served
with the division at Fort Knox
until spring of 1942 when the
rumbles of war in Europe grew
too strong to be ignored. The
division moved to New York
to board transport ships that
would move them to Northern
Ireland. From Ireland the div
ision moved to England where
the North Africa invasion plans
took shape.
In November of 1942 nearly
15000 men of the 1st AD hit
the beaches in North Africa and
became the first American
fighting force to land on foreign
soil. The Germans under Field
Marshal Romell surrendered
