"This is a pig pin" states
Mrs. Gus Emmons manager

she isn't referring to the

Rather she is speaking of

What kind of effect does

At times Matthau (Henry) con-

The film avoids the black
comedy cynicism of Chaplain's
wife-mudering "Monsieur

dergoes a change of heart con
current with his wife's discovery
of a new species of fern which
she names after him. He decides
to become a history teacher and
spend his life with her.
Elaine May's slapstick is

tinuously fun to watch. He is
able to play hilariously a lout
("The Odd Couple") con-man

a pompous sophisticate because
he serves the unwitting irony
common to all three. Henrietta's
thieving servants and lawyer
who together form a large con-

themselves as a kind of
theatrical act are sufficiently
wild to be funny.

Mrs. Emmons. "We made out
pretty well but imagine our
surprise when we received
new furniture for the dining
area later that day!"
The furniture consists of
both round and square tables
with oak chairs of Early
American design. The ladies
have added a touch of home
to this furniture by providing
flowers on each table.
But the main attraction in
Snack Bar 501 seems to be
the genuine friendliness of the

customers and have even coin
ed special words for some of
their food. These words are
based on their customer's de
sires.
"We are still trying to think
of a name for one special
sandwich ordered by a staff
sergeant" states Mrs. Em
mons. "It consists of ham
egg cheese bacon lettuce
pickles fried onions tomatoes
and lots of mayonnaise."
The price of this sandwich
requires a special estimate
based on the costs of the in
gredients and other sandwich
prices but other specials are
not so complex. For instance
there's the Colonel Special.
Actually this is just a regular
breakfast but got its name
from the fact that a colonel
in the G-l office orders it
every day at noon.
"We can't advertise our food
by these special names"
states Mrs. Emmons. "But a
be of a
customers have learned about
them and order by these
names in jest."
But no matter what is
ordered the girls try their best
to serve it up with a smile
and a witticism. They all
agree it helps make the day
a giant smog-belching missiledecaying roadside billboards
base.
Made by the "All in the
Family" and "Night they Raid
ed Minsky's" team Norman
Lear and Bud Yorkin "Cold
Turkey" displays an expected
acute awareness of detail. Lear-
Yorkin seem to be extremely
talented in explicating sub
cultures through comedy (be it
Queens old New York burlesque
or Middle America.) The faces
and foibles of Eagle Rock are
examined as unsparingly as the
n. mailer
that herald in the town and the
movie.
There are many many funny
running gags that are balanced
well along a spectrum whose
extremes are the subtle (the
Reverend's wife's pimples) and
the ridiculous (a scatological old
lady with a gun). Bob and Ray
provide a comic series of im
itations of newscasters like
Walter Chronic Hugh Upson and
Arthur Lordly. It is a no-holds-
barred syle of satire that is
reminiscent of the comedies of
the 1930's and the fantasy ele
ment of the quit-smoking idea
it el a re a a
dimension of reality through the
prevalence of commercial
everyday products like Kellogg's
cereal and Time Magazine.
The reverence with which
is re
midwesterners is the flip side
of Henry's worship of his Fer
rari. Different cultures dif
ferent idols. It may be though
that the locale and satire of
Cold Turkey" hitting cruelly
closer to home for more people
than does "A New Leaf" will
make it less popular than the
film about the filthy rich.

go better for everyone. There
are times however when it
is hard to smile and treat
customers with kindness ac
cording to the manager. Some
people just don't understand
that we must refuse service
to those violating uniform
regulations. "But" she adds
quickly "the uniform code is
seldom'violated."
Her biggest complaint is
.that soldiers will come into
the snack bar and stand in
he vi in it
removing their hats. "It gives
me the impression that they
are not gentlemen" she states.
"It's a personal thing but I
just don't think it looks very
nice."
Recalling one very bad in
cident Mrs. Emmons says "I
spotted this lady in the serving
line wearing short shorts.
When I stated that I could
not serve her she became
hostile and stated that one
of the other employees had
a re ad a he
There was a long line and
the employee had not noticed
the clothing violation. I told
the lady that I would be glad
to bring her order outside
when it was ready but that
I could not allow her to re
main inside in shorts. I even
pointed out that the dress code
was posted prominently on the
door.
"But instead of accepting my
explanation she became very
indignant and began cursing
and calling me a dirty black
so and so. She called me
several unquotable names but
I realized that becoming angry
would only worsen the situa
tion. Instead I explained that
the dress code applied to other
facilities on post and that
os it a os a
similar codes. I asked her to
consider this and she finally
left but not until she had
hurled some more curse words
my way.
"Had I lost my temper and
tossed a few words of my
own it would have ac
complished nothing but to
make me appear just as
ridiculous as she."
Mrs. Emmons attributes her
ability to handle such situa
tions to the fact that she has
worked in military exchanges
and snack bars since the early
'50s. She has followed her hus
band around the world but
has refused to sit on the
sidelines as he pursues his
career. "My career with the
exchange service is very im
portant to me" she states."
But she is quick to point
out that she could do nothing
without her fellow employees
"The other two ladies are just
wonderful" she said. Mrs
Wright and Mrs. Loetcher
haven't had as long a career
in serving military personnel
but they seem to enjoy their
work. Mrs. Wright who is
married to an enlisted man
states that she had the
mistaken idea that officers
were hard to get along with
before beginning work at
Snack Bar 501.
"I never knew they could
be so understanding" she
states.
The third member of the
team is Mrs. Loetcher. She
remains in the background
most of the time making sure
that glasses cups and other
items are kept completely
sanitary. "This is one of the
most important areas of our
work" explains Mrs. Emons.
"Cleanliness is a byword of
our operation."
And so Pride Integrity and
Guts as practiced by the
employees of Snack Bar 501
have not only helped the snack
bar receive new furniture
but help keep the customers
smiling as they enjoy their
meals.
