By STEVE LASSITER
"Which way is the party?" asked the general.
"Due east from here about 51 years from now'
came the reply.
"Forward Ho-oo-oo-oo!" And the mounted
troopers of the 1st Cav. Div. who had gathered be
fore the photographer out at the backyard of Ft.
Bliss Texas headed into the annals of military his
tory.
It is fitting that the troopers of the past repre
sented by the members of the 1st Cav. Division
Association should hold their reunion in conjunc
tion with the 1st Cav.'s organization day activities
to commemorate over half a century of active ser
vice.
From horses to helicopters is a proper synopsis
of the forward movement of the unit Gen. Dauglas
MacArthur referred to as the First Team. In 1942
troopers of the 1st Cav. were still horse solders
patrolling the west Texas border out of Ft. Bliss.
The changeover came in 1943 when Gen. MacArthur
sent for the 1st Cav. Div. On Oct. 20 1944 the
division (dismounted) spearheaded the assault land
ings in Leyte helping fulfill Mac Arthur's promise:
"I SHALL RETURN!"
From the Philippines and their triumphant
march into Manila the First Team entered exten
sive training for an assault on Kyushu Japan. V-J
Day marked the end of the war and the First Team
led the march of the Allies into Tokyo. The Korean
Conflict called the division back into action and
on July 19 1950 the 1st Cay. Div. captured
Pyongyang North Korea marking still another
enemy capital to fall to the First Team.
In the early 1960's the "Howze Board" headed
by Gen. Hamilton H. Howze formulated the ra
tionale and requirements for an air assault division
—which was to become the 1st Air Cav. Div. Thus
the story of the division as it progressed from sad
dle to gunship.
The proven division of the past is today the

experimental division for the future. Under the
guidance of the Modern Army Selected Systems
Test Evaluation and Review (MASSTER) the First
Team has become the primary test vehicle for the
Army's analysis of new concepts. Former members
and associates of the "Howze Board" among them
HI Corps and Ft. Hood Commander Lt. Gen.
George P. Seneff Jr. and deputy commanding gen
eral of MASSTER Maj. Gen. Robert M. Shoemaker
are now the leaders of TRICAP (triple-capability)
and ACCB (Air Cavalry Combat Brigade) testing.
Airmobility with fire power flexibility and shock
effect has been battle tested in Vietnam under
counterinsurgency conditions. The tests that now
revolve around the 1st Cav. Div. are aimed
at evaluating the airmobility concept in mid and
high intensity warfares.
Since May 51971 the date the division returned
from Vietnam the First Team has been under care
ful scrutiny. Countless tests have been run each un
der the watchful eyes of evaluators. Each unit of
the Cav. contributed its share in accomplishing
its assigned tasks. Each commander and every
soldier participated under trying conditions so that
these tests these exercises could be a meaning
ful contribution to the division's overall mission.
Organization day and the 1st Cav. Associa
tion's reunion will be a unique experience in that
it will bring together the horse soldier and the sky-
trooper. There will be casual conversation and per
haps some heated debates but the subject at hand
will no doubt be about the First Team past
present and future.
