CURRENT HAPPENINGS
Hubert Meadows was honored at the November meeting of the
Orange County Historical Society as "man of the year". He was
cited for his untiring efforts, his willingness and availability
when help was needed on projects.
"How many times have we said 'Call Hubert' and he was al-
ways there and willing to work. He was never stopping to count
what he had already done," noted Enola Voss, president of the
OCHS as she made the presentation.
Born in Tyler in 1920, Hubert Meadows came to Orange in
1941 "looking for a job". He soon found one with the Brown-Lane
firm as a carpenter building stucco houses for Naval personnel.
Later he went to work as a note teller for the First National
Bank; worked at Consolidated Steel Shipyards; served a three year
hitch with the Field Artillery in the Pacific; and finally ended
up working as an operator at DuPont.
Meadows recently retired from DuPont after 27 years with
the company.
An active member of the Orange County Historical Society,
he and his wife, Dorothy have worked with the Heritage House from
its beginning.
Actually, he said, Dorothy was the one who stirred his in-
terest in the historical. "We both have always admired old houses
and we took advantage of an opportunity to buy the old Hustmyre
home. It is now completely restored and we enjoy living in the3.
