The Meadows have three children, Sherry (Mrs. Douglas)
Tomerlin, of Clear Lake, Chris of Lufkin and Benjamin who is at-
tending Lamar. There is one grandchild, David Tomerlin.
On accepting the award, Hubert smiled, "I still don't know
how I got this, but thank you very much."
The presentation was made at the Society's first annual
banquet held at the Ramada Inn. The nominees for office in 1978
were elected by acclamation and installed by Roy Wingate following
the supper.
Bill Nugent was named president to succeed Enola Voss;
Dorothy Meadows was named first vice president; George Holland,
second vice president and program chairman; Nadine Slaughter, third
vice president; Marge Roberts, secretary; and Julia Wingate Bacom,
treasurer.
Directors named were: Mrs. Voss, Meadows, Mrs. Coke M.
Tilley and Frank Karppi.
Louis Dugas, a former president of the OCHS was the speaker
and gave a brief run down on the history of the Society, noting
that the original group had consisted of six members. Among those
early members were Cullen Browning and his wife, Vera, and the
group met for awhile in the office of the Orange Leader.
Al.so among those early members was Dr. Howard Williams whose
interest in the history of Orange and Orange County was one of the
factors that brought about the formation of the historical society.
