A partial listing of the tax roll for that 1852 assessment
of Orange County included:
Allen, George, and Allen, Hannah: 590 acres, valued at
$295 in the William Allen Survey on the Neches River. George
Allen was credited with 11 horses valued at $220 and 350 cattle
valued at $1,750. Total value for both was $2265, plus 50 cents
for poll tax for George Allen. State tax for both was $3.09 and
the county tax was $1.94.
Ashworth, William, Sr.: 1043 acres, valued at $1,043 in
the William Dyson Survey on Cow Bayou; 2179 acres, valued at
$1,089 in the Gilbert Stevenson Survey on the Neches River; and
200 acres, valued at $100 in the John Jett Survey on Cow Bayou.
The tract on the Neches River was apparently the Ashworth home-
stead as personal property was listed here including two Negroes,
valued at $1,500; 35 horses, valued at $525; and 600 cattle valued
at $3,000. One of the other tracts was probably under a share-
cropping contract or lease with a man named East who had 18
cattle valued at $90. Total value was $7,347; State Tax, $10.88,
County Tax $5.44.
Ashworth, Luke: 64 acres, valued at $800 in the William
Dyson Survey on Cow Bayou; 60 horses, valued at $1,200; 900 cattle
valued at $4,500. Total value, $6,500; Poll Tax, 50 cents;7.
