In the back country, beauty is there for the poor as well as
the rici. Just take a seat on an old rail fence that winds ac-
ross the meadow and look toward the sky on a summer day. There is
quiet all around except for the call of a bobwhite and the sweet
songs of a few birds that dwell there.
And when the evening shadows begin to gather there comes
the song of the wood thrush, the most beautiful of bird songs.
The whippoorwill may call from the deep forest and the night hawk
will chatter and whirl overhead.
To the west the sky turns to rose and the rays of a sinking
sun draw streaks across the western heavens. The clouds to the
east turn lavender and theiredges seem to be trimmed with celest-
ial lace. That is part of the beauty of the still countryside.20.
