CLAIBORNE WEST, STATESMAN
Willie Mae Weinert in Seguin Enterprise Nov. 13, 1936
(The following is an excerpt taken from Mrs. Weinert's book on
the history of Guadalupe County and is used with the special
permission of Mr. Joe Bruns, Sr., Chairman of the Guadalupe
County Historical Commission and President of the Seguin Con-
servation Society, the publisher of the re-run of the Weinert
book. Permission obtained by Frances Reid.)
Altho Claiborne West did not take part in the Battle of
San Jacinto, he took an even more important part in making Texas
a free and Independent Nation. He was one of the fifty-eight
signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
He was in addition to this, a member of the first convention
of the Colonists in Texas in 1835. He was a delegate to the Con-
sultation at San Felipe, a signer of the resolution of tribute
to Austin; a member of the committee of general council, a member
of the committee to draft the Constitution of the Republic of
Texas. He served as a member of the early Legislature after Texas
was admitted to the Union. His will was filed in Guadalupe County
on March 12, 1867 and is a simple and dignified document that
one would expect from a man who helped draft the Texas Declaration
of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic of Texas.
He says: "To my beloved wife all of my property and effects,
both real and personal, of which I may die possessed, for and
during her natural life, to be disposed of as she sees fit by
will to my children." Mrs. Florinda West was made executrix.
The will was signed by Henry Maney and Asa and A. J. Sowell as
witnesses. Another old hero of Texas was at that time County
Judge, Nathaniel Benton.21.
