Clairborne West died Sept. 10, 1866, and was buried in River-
side Cemetery, Seguin, Guadalupe County, Texas.
Mr. West came to Texas in 1823 and was married three times.
The first wife was Annie Garner, whose father and West were neigh-
bors in Montgomery County. There were eight children born to
Clairborne West and his first wife. He had no children either by
the second or third wife. One of those eight children, Louisa, married
Thomas Gay, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. This Mr. Gay
operated one of the first race tracks in Guadalupe County just
before the Civil War. This track was near Geronimo Cemetery.
Clairborne West lived at his home on the Gonzales highway.
This house is now known as the Denman place.
The honesty and careless regard for property, particularly
land, is well demonstrated in documents left by Mr. West. It
seems that he borrowed $1161 from Mrs. Florinda West, his third
wife, and gave a mortgage on certain slaves. Then along came the
Civil War and the slaves were set free. West directed that before
any other debts be paid by his estate, Mrs. Florinda West was to
be reimbursed for the money lent him. Another transaction showing
his desire to be scrupulously honest concerned his second wife,
who was a Mrs. Prudence Kimble. She had four children and both
Prudence and Clairborne West signed deeds of gifts to land that
had belonged to Mrs. Prudence Kimble and her first husband. These
deeds gave to each of the four Kimble children 217 acres of land.
This was in 1860, so Mr. West was a citizen of this county in the
early days; as these are recorded in Book i, page 81 of the deed22.
