her patients. Once she saw the woman was in labor she never
left her until the baby was born. "Most of the people were good
and helpful and I enjoyed my work. But sometimes the houses
were so filthy I couldn't eat. Once a man came for me after his
wife had started labor. He had taken his time and lived way
out near Bridge City. When we got there she had delivered her-
self but the baby was gone.
I asked her what she had done with it and she said the
children had wrapped it up in rags and threw it out to the hogs."
This was an unusual case and apparently concerned a premature
birth, more in the nature of an abortion or miscarriage.
All of that is behind her now and Gladys spends most of her
spare time crocheting or quilting. She recently completed nine
rugs. "I believe I ruined my eyes". Later Gladys made me a
gift of one of these. Most are on display at the Thrift and
Gift Shop in Orange operated by senior citizens.
Her current project is a Holy Quilt which features an oil
painting on silk as the center square with carefully blocked
pieces of silk and shiney material for the other squares. "A
Mrs. Miller drew the picture for me of Jesus on thecross and
gave me some of the material."
The quilt somehow symbolizes the way Gladys believes - it
is a reminder of her own recent experiences with religion. Born
and raised a Catholic, she somehow always felt something lacking.
Though she married twice in the Catholic Church, her last mar-
riage was in the Pentecostal Church.39.
