ASIAN AMERICAN FESTIVAL
■
The Asian American Dance Company from Cookie Joe's Dancin' School performs
at the Asian American Festival, May 16 at Sharpstown Center.
Many Asian 'Americans and
non-Asians gathered Sunday,
May 16 at Sharpstown Mall to
celebrate the third Asian
American Festival. There were
cultural exhibits, gifts,
food, and performances from
11 Asian cultures.
The cultural program con-
sisted of classical and folk
dances, intrumental music,
martial arts, and vocal per-
formances. There were a total
of 47 performances done by
350 performers. Costumes used
were rich and colorful.
The Cultural Program Direc-
tor, Danielle Chappell, said
$18,000 was spent in prepara-
tion for the festival. The
sources of funds were adver-
tising in the program guide,
and the previous year's ad-
mission receipts. This year's
funds will be used for the
production of a videotape,
scholarship funds, and vairious
community functions.
There were ten executive
committee members, and over
50 sub-committee members.
Chappell said 'the job is
strictly voluntary.'

tion to her students and her
profession, Waki is not be-
ing asked to return to the
southwest-area school next
year. Sharpstown principal
William Jackson admits the
quality of her credentials,
but says the decision is
based on predetermined cri-
teria. In such personnel
decisions, according to
Jackson, the "Singleton

one which apparently out-
weighs such factors as
qualifications. The Single-
ton Ratio determines the
racial composition of HISD

percentages. It was formu-
