UH Professor Wins Excellence Award
At the University of
Houston commencement ceremcny
held on May 15, Professor
Liang-Chi Shen received the
"Research Excellence Award"
of the College of Engineer-
ing in recognition for his
outstanding accomplishments
in research and his contri-
butions to the research pro-
grams in the college. Pro-
fessor Shen was given a
plaque and a cash prize of
$2,000. Among more than a
hundred faculty in the col-
lege of engineering at UH,
Professor Shen was the sev-
enth person to receive this
honor, which was established
in 1976.
Professor Shen joined the
University of Houston in
1967 after receiving his Ph.D.
degree from Harvard. He be-
came the chairman of the
electrical engineering depart-
ment fi ve years ago• In the
last fifteen years, Profes-
sor Shen has published more
than 40 technical papers in
numerous prestigious jour-
nals. He established a re-
search group in the area of
applied electro-magnetism to
study antennae and electro-
magnetic waves. His research
projects have received sup-
port from the National Sci-
ence Foundation and the Army
Research Office. Three years
ago , he expanded his re-
search into oil exploration,
especially electromagnetic
techniques for well logging.
The oil industry is so inter-
ested in his work that 16
companies, including the
Chinses Petroleum Company in
Taiwan and the British Petro-
leum Company in England, have
formed a consortium to sup-
port his project financially.
In addition to being respon-
sible for these research pro-
grams, Professor Shen was
also instrumental in strength-
ening a geology-electrical
engineering joint project
which is also related to oil
exploration. That project
is aiming at studying seismic
waves for finding petroleum
deposits. The research group
is headed by Professor
G.H.F. Gardner whom Profes-
sor Shen recruited from Gulf
Research and Development Com-
pany. The joint project is
now supported by more than
AO companies. These geophys-
ical exploration research
projects have garnered an
international reputation for
the Electrical Engineering
Department at the University
of Houston.
Professor Shen was born in
China and grew up in Taiwan
where he attended National
Taiwan University. After a
year of military service, he
came to the United States
with a full fellowship to
study at Harvard. His Ph.D.
dissertaion advisor was Pro-
fessor Ronald W.P. King, who
is a pioneer in antenna re-
search. Professor Shen's re-
search at Harvard was also
closely guided by Professor
T.T. Wu, a prominent American
Chinese scholar well known in
both engineering and physics
circles. Since he moved to
Houston, Professor Shen has
gone to Harvard almost every
summer to continue collabor-
ating with Professor King and
Professor Wu on many research
projects.
Professor Shen is married
to Grace Liu whom he met in
Cambridge when she was attend-
ing the Wellesley College.
They have two sons, Michael,
13, and Eugene, 10. Both are
attending HISD Vanguard Pro-
gram schools. They also go to
HCWA Chinse School on Satur-
days, and can speak and write
Chinese. They participated in
the Mandarin speech contest
sponsored recently by the
Chinses Voice in Houston.
Eugene won second place in
his age group.

The scholarship is awarded
to a highschool student of
Asian-Aiuerican ancestry who
manifests an awareness of his
cultural background, and con-
tributes to the communtiy.
The contestants were not be-
ing judged on academic abil-
ity or financial needs.
Dr. Daniel Watanabe, commit-
tee chairman, said among the
12 nominees, Kuon had the
best qualifications for the
"model of an Asian."
The scholarship winner was
selected by a panel of judges
including the director of
the Asia Society, Patricia
Young; Poet Khoi Tien Bui1;
and Houston Community College
instructor Raymond Lew.
The judges selected the
winner based on information
the nominees sent in. The
application included infor-
mation on student background,
interests, community contri-
bution, and a letter of nom-
ination. The committee did
not talk or meet with the
nominees personally; however,
they did talk to the person
who made the nomination.
Muoy Kuon, 18, is one of
five children of Mr. and Mrs.
Ngy Kuon of Houston. The
Kuons migrated from Cambodia
due to the civil war, and
came to Houston in the sumtrer
of 1975.
Miss Kuon attended W.D.
