"young turks", a complimentary expression used for
young men singled out for membership in the
exclusive American Society for Clinical Investigation.
By recommendation only, this society admits
outstanding medical doctors in research. Larry Chan
is the recipient of the number 1 Investigator Award, the
prestigious Louis N Katz Young Investigator Prize of
the American Heart Association Billions of dollars are
presented in grants and awards each year Dr

instances, as to the direction of thesegifts. Adecision-

Address.
Dr. Chan is associate editor of the medical journal
"Metabolism", is a much in demand speaker, having
fulfilled engagements in many parts of the U.S., as well
as Canada, France, West Germany and Switzerland
However, a most recent invitation to speak in Japan
had to be declined in preference to family, for it was
scheduled in August, when the children were re-
entering school for the Fall '84 semester It would have
been much more desirable a journey with wife Maria
and the children to enjoy the trip. To Larry Chan, the
private individual, speaking engagements are not of a
compulsory nature.
Larry and Maria, both born in Hong Kong, are
Cathplics. Both attended Catholic schools. Larry
majored in chemistry, physics and biology, graduating
with honors from Wah Van College in Hong Kong. (He
was awarded the Grantham Scholarship, presented to
the top 20 of a class of 2,300 high school graduates).
From a class of 70, Larry was one of three honored with
Distinction in Medicine awards given at the University
of Hong Kong. He also won the First Prize award in
Pediatrics, then proceeded to internships at the
University of Hong Kong and Victoria Hospital in
London, Ontario, Canada. A residency in Medicine
followed at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri,
afterwhich he served as a postdoctoral fellow in
biochemistry at Washington University. From there, he
went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee,
where he became an instructor in Medicine and later
instructor, assistant professor, associate professor
and presently professor in the departments of cell
biology and medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in
Houston, Texas.

for the N.I H and the N S.F., Dr Larry Chan serves on
the committee of the National Heart. Lung and Blood
Institute, Research Review Committee He is a

Charles and Marian
Chin
By June Dove Leong
Charles, the son of Mr &Mrs. Peter Chin of Houston,
fortunately attended the University of Texas in Austin,
where he met a lovely lass by the name of Marian Eng.
Because both enrolled in social studies to attain
bachelors degrees in sociology and attended identical
classes, they grew to know one another much better.
Charles changed Marian's name to Chin at the wed-
ding in her hometown, San Antonio Today, they are
the parents of a son, Cameron, 4 1/2 years, and a
daughter, Graham, 17 months.
Marian always did a lot of handiwork, for it was fun
and interesting to do Because she enjoyed crochet-
ing, knitting and needlepoint, Charles also decided to
learn this hobby. Happily, it grew from an entertaining
craft to a progressive, money-making business.
For many years, as owners and buyers for their
shops, they have travelled to San Francisco, Dallas,
and many other cities together with little son Cameron,
says Marian, so Cameron is now cheerfully anticipated
and welcomed wherever they go.
Their first store "Twinkles" started in 1974 on Wes-
theimer and Chimney Rock. In 1979, "Twinkles" relo-
cated to Sage Road. Another store, "Needlework"
started in 1976 in Sharpstown, followed by "Needle-
work Galleria" in the Galleria in 1982.
Marian and Charles supervise all stores with the help
of managers in each location. Most of their personal
attention, however, is concentrated on the "Twinkles"
on Sage Road where next door is Sage West Office
Supply, jointly owned by themselves and brother Ott
Chin. Mrs. Joseph Eng (Mary), who lives in San Anto-
nio, is Marian's mother.
