Hume mat Farm.
Tde IIocse. The only probul;! source
of dinger to health in the farm bouse lies
in the condition of the cellar or of the
pace which separates the lowest floor from
tbe grouod. If there be a cellar observe
whether" it it dry and free from etuuJiog
water or decayed vegetable matter (allowed
to accumulate- there through the negligence
"of errant). If the house is built Ui the
ground tbe lowtr floor should he at least
eighteen inches above the grouod aod the
Idea should be so open that the air can cir-
cnlata freely through this space.
Xauc Slops. low common i it for the
kitchen authorities in a farm house to throw
- the slops upon the ground just outkitlc the
kitchen door and perhaps within six feet
of the well. I have known of a boarding
house epidimx of diarrhoea which could be
traced to nooiber source Irian the contam-
ination of tbo well water by a shallow pool
f sun-exposed foul-smelling slops. A
crtnented ciitern should be built about
aeventy-fle or ooe hundred feet from the
house and at adiatance from the well an
to this all the kitchen sli.pi vct'ctable
waste etc. should be conducted through
suitable pipe or conduit. From the cis-
tern these matters may bo fed to the n
or thrown upon the ground at a proper dis-
tance from tbe house.
Draisaoe. This is a more difficult sub-
ject to investigate and one couccrning
which I hardly venture any remarks in this
place. In a general way however tbe
Statement may be made that pools of stand-
ing water or maruhv flat near brocks or
traams (except perhaps at the setxiiit) arc
not desiiablo neighbors. This is eppeciully
the case if tbe liousa in which you live ia
situated in a hollow ( in tome mountain
valley however elcvaictj it m.iy be above
theses) where the airdo"s not freely cir-
culate. Tbe prevalence of typhoid fever in
tome of the Vermont and New York moun-
tain valleys especially in the early autumn
is probably to be explained by the exixlence
of just such conditions. Iu the ciiso of a
large hotel the investigation should be
practically the same as in the caaeof a farm
Louse. The difficulties in the way of audi
an investigation will be found however
to be greater and it would probably be
better in such a case to secure the ausist-
ance of aome physician or engineer wLo ia
familiar with the subject.
Tint Ice. The ice may be so loaded
with vegetable matter as to give rise to
quite severe disturbances of the bowels and
stomach. If it be found free from linlxjd-
ded impurities and if when melted it be
free from an unpleasant odor one may
aafely assume that no danger is to be an-
ticipated from this source. An interesting
epidemic of bowel troubles was traced to
impure ice last summer at Ilyo Dcach.
Tbe Pmvr. There is little cr no danger
from contamination of the air by tho con-
tents of the privy. The real danger lies in
tbe diffusion of these contents through the
oil and their contamination of the water
of -the well. To avoid such a possibility
tbe privy should be placed at least sixty or
seventy feet from the well and if thu di
rection of tbe natural drainage currents bu
' known in such a position that conteuta of
tba privy will drain away from the well.
Setter yet let the privy bo so constructed
that its offensive contents shall simply lie
upon me suriace or tbe ground aud let
inera oe easy access to it Irom behind so
that fresh earth may be frequently added.
and the entire accumulation removed once
week.
" TnE Well. If the water is clear and
weet and free from any unpleasant odor.
one may pretty safely assume that no harm
is to be anticipated from this source. Farm-
ers aro often in the habit however of
hanging meat in the well for the purpose
of keeping it cool. A pretty severe epi
demic (in 1874) of diarrhoea In a boarding
house at one of the healthiest Long Inland
summer resorts was traced td the existence
of a decomposing shoulder of mutton at the
bottom of the well into which it had acci
dentally fallen.
Fob Whoeveb rr Fits. There aro near
ly as many bad wives as bad husbands.
Uany men who work hard and try to do
well in life are neglected and abused by
improvident women.
1 ney are condemned to cat tbo poorest
dinners when they provide tho best the
market affords.- .......

dy coffee and tough pie crust how cuu a

Such men often drink whisky because
their food distresses them as it would any
' one who bad not a cast-iron stomach and
the habits ot intemperance are often in th;s
way begun through the fault of bis wife.
' It costs more to cook poorly than to make
food good and palatable.
If a woman tuns home from a neighbor's
just in time to throw a pie together buke
It bring it on the dinner-table but she
commits a great offense against her family.
If a man baa only an hour to go home
get his dinner and return to business it
ahould be ready for him promptly on time
else he Will eat very hot food in tbe greatest
' haste and start off at a rapid walk all of
which ia very bad and will soon show Its
effects upon the strongest man. . .

Ladim and gmtlemcnln accordance with
the usage and customs on such occasions I
sppeaf before you by the request of t ur
aboard of directors for the purpose of an-
BoUncic the formal opening ol the second
exposition of the Capital State Fair Asso-
ciation. John Randolph of Roanoko began his
grass speech against Mr. Clay's resolution
exposing the sympathy of the people of
the United States with the Greeks in their
Straggle for freedom with these words:
This Mr. Speaker is pen baps the pretti-
est theme for declamation tbat was ever
presented to the consideration of a deliber
stive body.
So I may also say with propria v on th's
occasion the theme is so fiuitfnl that it
seems never to be exhausted. Since Mr.
Greeley set the txuupte of tel irg the
world what he knew about farming almost
every public speaker seems deposed to fol
low in bis footsteps. Now every polui
cian lawyer merchant divine or ooctor
elves bia views npoa farming and like Sir
John raUtafl UbUles of green field." 1

A great maor re.'uw to aid pleading
poverty and talking about the good old
times that arc gone aud complaining of
the hard times that are here. The truth i
that neither the past nor the future are of
the very first consequence to us in our bas-
inets affairs be tbey ever eo varied. The
good time the true golden fge for ua all
is iieithtr in tbe past nor in the future; it is
in the present time. Tbe past has already
Koce to join the years beyjnd the fl iod ; the
future we nmv never see. Uut be truth of
the matter is that Texa and especially
lravis county basnet suffered materially
from liarJ times. In I860 the total taxa
ble value of all tbe property personal real
and mixed in tbi3 county was largely lens
than four millions of uoilarp mciu iing in
that estimate all our recently enfranchised
American citizens of African descent. How
in 1870. when two decades have not
yet passed over our head? our
taxable property is not less than
ten to fifteen miliiocs of collars with our
colored friends not counted. Observation
chows tlmt every year the amount of in
closed and cultivated huu in this county
is rkpidly increasing while our muful pro
ducts of nil kinds aie annually multiplied

primal eldest time of course rests heavily
on us ni re but there is uo place on tnis
itarth raid it h wisely on lamed tlmt it is
where a man caa honestly cum his daily
bread except by tlo sweat of bis brow.
rhere is no r-iu road to wealth any moic
than there is to luurning. We are doing
well enough here iiu 1 there is really no
good excuse for tho upalhy of our people
on this important matter. We however.
hope and trust that by the time another
year rolls around we will have so conducted
the BlT.iirsof this association and will have
produced such beneticial results that it
will bu then generally understood through
out the whole coinumr.ity that the interests
oi its stockholder. will bo carefully pro
tected ; that visitors will be cordially re-
ceived and couiteously treated while they
remain our guest-- and that m our treat
mcnt of exhibitors aud competitors in all
the diltercnt depart incnts and classes we
shall be governed by the good old Sax
on rule of ''fair play to all;" and
our first wish will always be "May the
best man win." AVben these matters are
fully understood I believe our farmers and
mechanics and merchants will display
deeper iuterest in our cu'erpriso than they
have heretofore done and that they will
all uiake it a point to own at least one share
of its stock so thru tho ats iciation may be
what it i intended to be a people's enter-
prise and one conducted for tbo good of
our whole people benefiting them all alike
by developing and displaying to the world
the varied and tich resources of our lovely
country.
In conclusion as I am like President
Grant serving out my second and last term
it seems proper that I should en this oc-
casion on behalf of myself and my breth-
ren of the board of directors return our
sincere thank's to that kind and indulgent
public who li'iva so generously aided us by
their presence in mulling our exposition a
success. Our thauka aro atao ou. to the
local press of cur city aud also to the press
of the State at large for their kindly words
of encouragement and good cheer.
Personally I feel under many obligations
to my brethren of the board of directors
without whose aid uud assistance I would
have accomplished r.orhing. And lasf
but not had I feel it due to our
ablo aud experienced general superin-
tendent Colonel Norton to say that
he hns faithfully ami ably discharged
the difficult tas-k a'-sigued to him and that
his skill experience aud unwearied atten-
tion has contributed very greatly to our Sue-
eft's. . Earnestly hoping that this exposition so
auspiciously begun may be conducted iu
such a manuei as to give universal satisfac-
tion and be so m in aged that this the last
of the great aulumuul fairs that have been
in Texas so marked and pleasant a feature
of this season nitty long remain a pleasant
memory with you all I now dechre the
second annual exposition ol the Capital
State Fair Association formally opened.
