V;r'.d is induced by the lecent lirook-
l.n l.urir to advert li the general
poverty of the theatrical prote-.siou.
'While a few stars may draw enoi-
niom lees the stock actois are alloweil
o:.ly a pittance. Tnis arises from the
ovtrcrowiU-d condition of this profes-
s. oti. and from the general depression
which his no reduced the public pat-
ronage. Talented stock actors are
glad to find engagements at $10 and
even :;() per week out of which must
come the expense of theatrical cos-
turn;. Many of this class are married
and how they contrive to meet the ex-
penses of life is certainly surprising.
Some of the less important perlormers
draw but ifl-l per week and others are
pai l even less. Chorus singers can be
hired at fifty cents a night that is for
i a-y parts w hich tup.iiri; no day attend-
ance lor rehearsal. 'Supes'are ubund
ant at rf'j per week. Hallct dancer
'"in be had iu great numbers at if-'i to
S per week. Upon the whole
the profession is marked by seveie
poverty which is in striking contrast
w ith the glare anl glitter of the theat-
rical display. Another feature brought
out by the same catastrophe is the
fact that nearly all the leading per-
formers are known by fictitious names.
Almost every man and woman who
goes on tithe stage assumes a theat-
rical title. Ktle Claxtou and Harry
Murdock are simply dramatic fictions.
When Dan Bryant died it was found
that the great master of urgro melo-
dies was really somebody else and
even 'Karncy Williams' was lound to
lie only 'Flaherty' when death closed
his eaieer. The only explanation of
this fashion is found in tne desire of
in .my young histriouists to avoid the
pursuit of families and friends. In the
case of nctreses anyone of the latter
by assuming a fictitious name escapes
the in cess tv of changing it in case ol
maiiiage. Iu this way the custom has
become permanent and the theatric il
iinonyina are only exposed by mit'o.-
tiine or death."

In w riting this articleit will not be
expected of me to draw tine lines of
comparison to suit fanciers of particu-
lar breeds nor to discus ( the relative
savormess aud aroma of the mutton of
any because some epicure has said there
was D difference. The object of the
husbandman and the tiller of the soil
is to make money by his pursuit.
The improved state of thecountry by
means of railroads the improvement
of rivers the increased number of
towns and cities manufactories nnd
population invites and demands a new
impetus in the oioiiuction of wool and
mutton in the West ana South. I have
been a close observer uu I breeder of
sheep for forty years; and for the last
twenty-eight years have used none but
tins purest bred long-wool mutton
sheep to sell ns breeders. No one can Uf e
without loss tt grade or impure bred
ram. I--.it- my object in this article is
to induce the common tiud unpretend-
ing farmer to make more money out of
sheep and woo! than lie does with a
very small outlay in money. First
buy of some leliable breeder a high
bred long-wool ram; use whatever
stock of ewes you may have and the
result will be mi increase of fifty per
cent iu weight of Wool the first gen-
eration. The increased weight of car-
cass will be one-third the liist genera-
ion. I! ee i lir-st g-ner ition as before
aud the next fleece will about double
the old stock and the weight of car-
cass will have increased nearly tifty
per c-nt. The wool from the first
generation if bred as above stated
from any of the breeds known to me
will if properly handled and sold
take rank as delaine wool and sell
for twenty-two per cent more t tin 11
clothing vv ool ; and wool from the sec-
ond generation will rank generally as
combing wool and sell for thirty-five
per cent more perpound than clothing
wool ar il seems destined ill the futun:
to outHcll all other descriptions of
wool; mid while sheep of all breeds
are readily sold when fat for mutton
the largest and heaviest invariably
bring more per pound than small sheep.
The long-wool are as hardy as any
other nuii the gentlest and best of all
others.
Hut few should engage iu sheep
husbandry alone. The fewer one has
the purer they should be bred; and if
one desires to have many hundreds
together he should grade up from
Spanish merino ewes. lie that de-
pends luatniy on a grain for winter feed
will fail; but he that relies upon grass
and hay or its ijuivslent. will succeed.
All breeders should Use C. II. Danna's
met alio labels of West Lebanon New
Hampshire that they may be known
should they get mixed with other.
