MY TWELVE YEARS IN BASE BALL
By Wm. Ross A. B. C.'e Iltcher.
Article No. 8.
Indianapolis Ind.
I spent the winter of 1914 In
Shreveport and the fans of that
city certainly treated me royal. So
when the Spring of 1915 came I
was already in town and did not
have to report. In 1915 we had al-
most a new clujb. The club was com-
posed of the following players:
Johnnie Stewart lb; Longware
ss; Hanady 3b; Llgrjans lb; Tar-
ver cf; Robs rf; Scott c; Sump-
ton c; Brown c; Carson Haynes p;
Moree p; Ross also pitched while
not playing out-field.
Take a Long Spring Training Trip.
That Spring we played more ex-
hibition games than ever before
after playing about twelve games
around home. We went to New Or-
leans for six games Alexandra
Louisiana for three games Laural
31iss. for four games. When we
Jft on our Spring trip Joel Tarver
the owner of the club said the
pitcher that won the most games on
that trip would get $25.00- The
man that stole the bases would get
a pair of Edwin Clapp shoes; the man
that made the most home runs
would get a silk shirt; so we all
felt good and all wanted to win
a prize. Our first game was in
New Orleans on Saturday. Brown
pitched for us and Lee for N. O.
They beat us 10 to 0; but I got
three hits out of four times at bat.
I pitched the Saturday game and
won it 8 to 1; and got four hits
on a home run. We won on Mon-
day and Scott hit a home run;
then we went to Laural Miss. for
four games Haynes pitched the
first game and lost It 4 to 3. I
pitched the second game and won
it 2 to 0. The third game we won
19 to 2. I got 6 hits and Long-
ware 5 hits; Hanady 4; In' all we
got 28 hits. On the last day I was
sick and couldn't play but we won
27 to 4; all the players got two
or more hits; Longware got 6
Llggan 5 one a home run. Our
next game was in N. O. on Sunday.
I pitched against Lee and beat him
1 to 0. On Monday Moree beat them
8 to 3; I hit a home run and Han-
ady hit a homer. We won the third
game 6 to 5. Our next game was
in Plagluemine La. We won the
first game 3 to 1; I pitched. We
won the second game 5 to 4; Brown
pitched in this game; Llggan won
it with a home run in the 10th in-
ning. Next stop was Alexandria on
Sunday. I pitched and won 6 to
0. and did not allow a safe hit. My
second no hit game in my life; I
also got hits on a triple. From
there we went home and all you
could hear was Nacogdoches who
pitched a "No Hit" and no sun
game in Alexandria.

TULSA OILERS SUFFER DEFEAT AT
THE HANDS OF DALLAS BLACK GIANTS
THE AFFRAY WAS VISITORS' FIRST EFFORT OF THE
SEASON.
The Dallas Black Giants met and
conquered the Tulsa Black Oilers
here Sunday in the fifth game of
the Spring training series 7 to 1
with Comer and Sneed doing tin
chunking for Tulsa. Shanks receiv-
ing the call from the local stable
for mound duty. He made an im-
pressive debut before local fans in
the roll of a pitcher. He was wild
at times but lasted four and one-
third innings during which time he
struck out four men gave up five
hits and Issued five free trips to
first base.
He was derricked in favor of
Pitcher Sampson in first half of
the fifth stanza who bunned a

itors. Pitclier Comer of the opposition
was steady in all stages of the game
until the seventh round. This in-
ning proving fatal to his perfor-
mance. The big fellow fed the
Giants out of his hands for Fix in-
nings and blanking them equally as
many times. In last half of sixth
he was going like a house a fire
exhibiting cases of three up and
three down. Here is how the ponies
ran:

given out at the dance.
The winners were . as follows

Ditched five and won five; most

league sen ion opened our club with
all those new players were not
strong enough and begun to slump
and in June we were on the bot-
tom and no chance to finish in
the first division. As this was my
first time with a loosing club. I
was disgusted and became dissatis-
fied and on the 24th of June we
took the Waco club from Shreve-
port to Monroe La. to play a
three game series there as that was
a better drawing town in the week
than Shreveport was at that time.
Ross Gets Job as Manager.
So while playing in Monroe Henry
Williams who at that time owned
a club in Monroe but it wasn't
very much at that time and didn't
have anyone to manage it that
knew anything about base ball; so
he and Dr. Miller of that city came
to the hotel where we were stopping
after we had played our 2nd game
and asked me if there was any
chance to get me to manage the
club In Monroe. Our club was go-
ing so badly at the time until I
was on the eve ot Jumping It any
way; 'so I told them yes if they
paid me my price and that they
would have to take Scott my catch-
er which they agreed to do; so
they asked me my salary.
Salary Best I Had Every Received.
I told them $90.00 per month
and expenses which they said was
O. K. I have always thought I
could have gotten more if I had
asked. Well we signed a contract
Scott and I. I told them that I bad
to play with Shreveport until the
1st as that was pay day which they

Makes Good as Manager.
On the 2nd of July I took up
my new job as manager of the club.
When I took charge of the club
it was composed of the following
players: Emmet Scott lb; Marcus
Stanfield 2b; Ed Dardon 3b;
rhompson ss; Benton If; Arline
cf; Johnson rf; Davis c; Fluss
p; Robinson p. When I took charge
I brought Scott with me so with
this bunch of players and my hand-
ling of them I won 45 games and
lost 17. My first time as a manager
which was not at all bad. I spent
the winter in Monroe and was
treated royal by all who knew me
and all the winter I got $20.00 a
month room and board and didn't
do anything.
