children take advantage of at-

Fraternities and Sororities Crow-
Ing In Importance
Each year Negro college frater-
nities ' and sororities are proving
definite forces for rood ln student
life nnd In their relations to their
communities. During the past few
years iuiiiortant movements have
been Inaugurated and promoted
with grent success. Among these
movements are the "Oo to High
School Go to College" campaign
hv the Aloha Phi Alnha Fratcr-
nlty. which received the hlqh
mendntlon of late President llnrd-
lng President Coolldge and t
large number of college Presi
dents and other important leaders;
the movement to encourage read'
ing of literature of Negro authors
fostered by the Omega Psl Phi
Fraternity; the "Guide Right"
movement of the Kappa Alpha Psl
Fraternity; and the educational
movements promoted by the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority and the
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. In
addition to the conduct of these
movements various scholarships
have been provided for worthy
Btudents by these organizations.
Serious l'urpose Shown by Con-
venlion.
Another indication of the eerl
ous purpose of the Negro College
fraternity may be noted ln the
vote of the Sixteenth Annual Con
ventlon of the Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity held ln Columbus Ohio
last year. As Indication of the
trend of the fraternity ln the dl
rectlon of greater service and use
fulness it was voted to send ten
delegates to represent the frater
nity at the Negro Sanhedrm cal'
led by Dean Kelly MUler at Chio
ago in Feb. '24. A resolution was
passed urging the release of the
remaining members of the 24th In.
fantry incarcerated at Leaven'
worth. Authorization of a contrt
butlon to the N. A. A C. P. to help
that organization ln its fight for
the passage of the Dyer Anti-
I ynchlng BUI. The "Go to High
School-Go to College" campaign
was given further approval and
was singled out as the outstand
ing concentrated activity of the
fraternity.

More than. 700 members and
friends of the Alnha Phi Alpha
i-raternity attended the Sixteenth
Annual Convention held last year
at Loiumbus. This year it is pre-
dicted that the number will reach
a thousand. This is a fair estimate
or attendance since there are
more than 2000 members of the
Alpha Phi Alpha living within a
radius of 300 miles of New York
City.
The railroads of the country
nave again granted rates of one
and one-half fare on the certifi
