What Carries Men into Drinking
Houses T
BY Has. WILLIAMS.
A committee in Kuelnnd has lately
reported on the woman question saying
that women are getting worse every yeur
and t hat. men go to public houses nioro lo
got rid or their wives than from any oth-
er rauKe. This is. indeed 'terrible. But
it is much the same iu all countries.'
I clip the above from a paper aud pro
pose taking it lor my text.
Womcd are getting worse are they? and
men are getting better 1 suppose! If they
are becoming less wicked I am glad to
bear it and my preaching has not been in
vain liut I want proof both of man's
increasing goodness and womau s auvanc
ing wickedness.
When I luke up a newspaper I see re'
corded there mauy crimes oommltted by
mm but very few commuted by women
W onion generally are not ban; on tne con'
trnrv nearly all the goodness in this
wicked world is possessed by women. It
is men who aro Satan's prime ministers
not women; the black sheep of a family
are nearly always male members. Wi
men stand on tbe topmost round or the
ladder of goodness while men are all be'
low scarcely ever thinking of climb ing
up to the peers of women.
Now what takes men into publio houses
atniglit? Oh those dreadful women at
borne drive them there; the poor ill used
oreatures are bo fearfully treated ey I he
queens of home Ibat they fly to the Invert
for Bolace. Dear eld Bacchus is their
oomtorter and friend.
Is it not wonderful that men should try
lo make anybody In their senses believe
that thoy are driven into taverns at nigh
by their iinhappiness at home? Oh I what
abjured nonsense; who believes it 7
There are a few men who do find their
oil aim of matrimony heavy and galling
and they cannot resist the temptation of
the tavern s open door. 11 is so muob
pleasure lo gaizile braady there than to
drink tea at home; who cares for the "cup
that cheer but not inebriates" wheu tbey
citn gel bold of a tumbler that both cheots
and inebriates I it is dull work silting
quietly at home wilh only a wifj; there
are cards and company at a driuklng
sabon; (hero is light and merriment ai:d
oysters aud beer steuic and punch aud
wine and brandy anything else the gen
tleman I'anoies.
He enjoys this so he goes when be can
getlt; no woman's disagreeable ways drove
aim into the place. My sisters uou t you
believe one word of it; you are ten times
more agreeable than those who are oalltng
yott disagreoable; and know all ye inno
cent and unottendlog women that men go
to the taverns simply because they wish
to; you have nothing to blame yoursilvei
for.
What carries single men there? They
are not driven into it too. Why you can-
not keep a single man at home ot an even-
ing. There is a pleasant family eirole
a gentle mamma lively musical sisters
and papa sound a sleep on the sofa. Does
Robert Homy and John and TuomB stay
at home to be sung lo and entertained by
J ulia and Lucy? Certainly not; they have
"engagements" which are pretty sure to
oarry them into drinking plaoes before
they get home. If they are able to walk
up stairs without having to catch hold of
the banisters it is a wonder.
No no my lords of creation do not put
your short oomings on us; blame your-
selves for being what you are; and if you
want to find home agreeable stay there
and try to make it so. If you would
throw into borne all the money you spend
in eating and drinking; and smoking in
taverns and throw yourself in along with
it yon would not have to eomnlain of tha
diBsgreeubleness of home and the woman
wno presides over it.
