II in I mi; linllMny Trains.
Totlm Eillloi'of XiiKliAi.ii.vs HniiiVMi:
Tho largest proportion of tlio acci
dents that occur on railroads result
from errors in time; especially is this
tho case where trains are operated on
single track roads. The telegraph will
not remedy this were it possible to sta-
tion operators every two miles. Jones
starts his train at one terminus on
schedule time; Smith does likewise at
the other end of the route. Kuril con.
doctor relies upon bis watch; any un-
forsecn accident lo these intricate and
tender pieces of mechanism may re
sult iu loss of life and thousands' of
dohars worth of property. As a gen
eral tiling passenger conductors carry
a lirst class watch und from our own
knowledge freight conductors ure not
the least bit behind in this respect; yet
the finest watch unless frequently ex-
amined may stop from dirt or a small
piece from the key in the process of
winding may lodge in the escapement
and result in mourning to many a wife
and child. There is u remedy for this
that would result in a vast saving to
railroad companies as well as a safer
feeling to the traveling community.
The damages resulting from collisions
alone to railroads in tlio State tlio past
summer will reach into tlio millions
enough to purchase a llrst class watch
for every man employed by tho com-
panies. The system adopted by some of the
foreign roads renders accidents by col-
lision almost mi impossibility. There
Is a suitable room nt all main depots
culled "Time Boom." Before the train
leaves tho depot the conductor und
engineer have to repair to this room;
here they arc presented with a watch
timed lo tho clock and Hie time they
must run their traiu by; when their
tour of duty is finished they return the
watch to the time room. The person
in eliurgo winds' it and issues when
again required for servicp. The
watches are of the very best manufac-
ture and are so cased that they cannot
be opened except by the person in
chargo of the time room. These
watches are frequently examined by a
practical watchmaker so that there Is
no danger of ''stops"
By the adoption of this system the
cost to railway companies would be
but a tritle compared to the security it
would give in tho running of trains.
The proper way would .be to have a
"time clock" iu tlio signal ofllce; at
"small expense the pendulum of this
clock could be connected with nil the
clocks on the lint. Foe Instance say
tho standard clock was at the . depot at
Houston of the Houston and Texas
Central Hallway we would connect the
pendulum of each clock with this at tho
sub-stations making each bent simul
taneously by electricity using the same
wires now used by tlio company. The
expense would bo small; a ten dollar
time piece at the sub-stations would
answer every purpose. Then wlh the
system of watches furnished to con
(luetonc and engineers n collision by
