FiDtBAL Ji'DOin are playing in these
later days more important role than
has heretofore been accorded either by
preiident or law. The most datigorous
feature in the appallina attempt of
Grant' adrain'tration to defeat both
law and justice in the return of a na
tional eleetiou is that the order for law-
lessness oomes from tho president of the
United States and that federal judges
are ordered to the bench on political
missions to sot aside the solemn judg-
ments of competent courts just as a
Mexican banditti would overthrow the
law of a disputed government.

BREAKFAST.
The Philadelphia Tunes in learnedly

is moved to ay that the cud of human
ell'ort is to dine well and that if dinner
ho the index of civilization hreaklast is
the instrument thereof. There are those
who affect to make liht of breakfast a
there are mime who would degrade.

unquestionably due to bud dime !; to
bad breakfasts may be ascribed a fuuvlul
proportion of the physical sidtnois ol
the world. Sot that Iho character cl
breakfast does not also influence man's
moral nature. On the contrary the
mischief which a bad breukfast works is
felt upon and through a man's nervous
organization sometimes as a prostrating
shook sometime in a subtle and insid-
ious way undermining tho wnolo intel-
lectual ttruoture till reason totters on
her throne. It is frightful to think ot
the havoc thus made; of tho happy
homes made desolate the young lives
blighted. To come homo to an ill-served
dinner may destroy oiio's appetite and
temper for the evoning but bedtime
will bring rest and tam. To rise to an
ill-served breakfast unfits a man lor the
society of his fellow beings all day long
and makes it impossible for him to
honestly earn his dinner But we need
not pursue .the argument further to
show tho grave importance of our sub-
jeot a subject for which wo implore the
conscientious consideration of tho read-
er. Some faint glimmerings of an ideu
of what constitutes a dinner have lately
seemed to penetinlo tho publio mind
but breakfast remains in profound neg-
lect. Tho average American dinner is a
melancholy example of zeal without
knowledge and tho consequent waste
of good material. The average American
breakfast displays neither goal nor
knowledge but the woeful darkness ol
barbarism. It is the saddest thing that
word or pen can toll of
It occur to us that a good breakfast

breakfast not in nnmo but in reality
In tho fust place a clean room and a
clean white tal lo cloth. The table
needs no olaborate decoration for break
fust only some flowers or green things
if they can bo had and a plate of fruit.
There is not a day in all the year when
some fruit may not be had if only an
apple or an orango; thin is the fust rs
soutinl of a wholesome breakfast and
there ia nothing cheaper. We leave out
of consideration oil beverages but water
and coffee but the coffee must be good
and hot and tho milk hot if not also
good. Add good bread or rolls or hot
toast and wo may then begin to consider
what we shall have for breakfast. Money
and time must decide tliis. Whether
there be fish and steak and an omelette
and so on In succession or only fish or
only the steak or chops or epgs or
whether there be nothing at all but the
collee and rolls cannot be regulated by
law. What the law should demand is
that what is served be served decently
and in order in cleanliness and quiet.
Theee things cost nothing but they are
worth all the rent. A man who would
turn away sick and nervous from an ill-
arrenged board loaded with all manner
or meats may go all day upon a break-
fast of herb with contentment tho
contentment derived from a bright
well-ordered table and a cueorful face
to look into his own.
