the weather during the month as good

report there has been no increase or
decrease In quantity of lands planted
In cotton. Stamld are represented as
good ar.d the plant Is generally form-
ing and blooming well. Its pre.ent
condition is good and much better
than las' year In some sections of
Rapides mid St. Laundry parishes cat-

no damage Is reported. '

Character of weather has been gener

found the report trtio. From w hat we
notihl learn It occurred as follows;
The man whoso name la K. Melius
camu into tho saloon and sat down lu
a chair. Soon ho arose and went Into
tho lunch house next dour ami asked
the man there to show him up stairs
over tho Mint Ho acted ipilte
strangely. Tho lunch mau then
showed lilm to tho stairway lu
tho rear of tho Mint and left
him. Ho took' Ills seat on tho
necoiid step from the bottom and
remained lu that position a long
time. Luke Dunn noticed him several
times but thought ho was asleep. He
rsmalucd there over au hour. Finally
somebody came In and said tho man
was dead. J)u examination it was
found to be true. A police ollli'er was
sent for and lu tho mnaiitimo they
carried him out ami took Hm to the
Lamar Hotel where he had been atop-
ping. Drs. Thurston Field and others
examined him and pronounced his
death to have boon caused by apoplexy
or hypertrophy of tho heart. Mr. W. C.
Connor and hid brother Immediately
chiuo down anil took ohargo of tho
body as ho was an old trli-nd of theirs.
From them we obtain the following
Information regarding the deoetwed:
Mr Connors had received letters that
ho might expect him lust month but
ho did not arrive here till Saturday
night. Sunday morning ho sent to
Mr Connor's storo for his mall.
Yesterday ho called ou Mr. Connor
and had a long talk with him nbout
business mutters and stated that ho
Intended going to Fort Worth yester
day and returning to-dsy when he
would pay a visit to Mr. Connor at his
house. He paid his bill at tho hotel
and tho hotel people supposed that he
had gone away Ou notlllcation of
ills death Mr. Connor telegraphed
immediately to New York to know
what should bo done with (lie body.
He hud his .remains removed to
Liuskles' shop and placed iu ice wait-
ing for instructions. Mr Melius was
a man about sixty years of age unil
weighed two hundred mid twenty-live
pounds. Ho had ou hid person when
lie died a diamond pin an open fnced
gold watch sevetity-niiin dollars in
green backu seven dollars and fifty-
live cents In silver baggage checks
letters etc. which wero taken charge
of by Mr. Connor. Mr. Melius wan a
man well-known In New York unit
also by all our shoo merchants here.
Ho was formerly tho senior partner of
the firm of Melius Trask & Ulpley
wlio failed Homo years ago liabilities
about ouO(AK). Mr. Melius was at the
time of his death connected with the
house of W. A. ltaudom the largest
boot and shoo firm iu New York and
ouino out here on business for the firm.
Ho was n man of great wealth at one
time and leaves considerable property
now. Ho has J a family of grown sons

mains will probably lie forwarded to
