The river continued to rise all duy
yeHterilny and the bottoms west of the
bridge were covered as far as the eye
could reach with water. The turn-pike
whs covered from the bridge to Its
west end and travel was entirely bus-
pended except a few venturesome
horsemen who knew where the road
lay and who went the length of the
road and back the water coming up to
their saddle girths lu the forenoon a
farmer attempted to drive his team
through the over-flow. Whin a few
hundred yards from the bridge the
horses left the road and the entire
team came near drowning. 1.- the
wagon were the wife and children of
the countryman and It was only by
the timely exertions of horsemen who
happened to tie on the bridge that they
were rescued The report spread rap-
Idly that they were drowned and large
crowds of people gathered on the
bridge. The waters were probably at'
the highest last night ami it was ex-
pected that they would begin to recede
this morning.
