the union mav be or what benefits are to
he derived from it is not yet clear to most
persons in Lima. It is believed bv many
that the leading object of the confederation
it to checkmate Chili in her long cherished
nroiectuf concluding a separate peace with
ltolivitrvy her offering tne department of
Msirruea with Arica in tne south
of ; lru. for her chief sea
port in exebance for Antifocosta.
This would havo suited Chili very well as
she would have gained possession of the
white nitrate deposits and have Bolivia
wedged in between ner and her hereafter
deadly enemy. Peru; but so far their diplo-
matists have failed and now what they gained
by the tword they will have to bold by the
tword.
A correspondent of the Starand Herald at
Lima gives the following account of tho
capture by tho Chilians of Tacana and Arica:
The allied army at the battle of Tacana
numbered all told only 8;;0 man and was
outnumbered by the Chilian army two to one.
The Chilians threw their wholo force on the
left flank of the allied army at the outset in-
slead of attacking in front as was anticipated.
The allied left wing although repeatedly
reinforced from the reserve under Monlero
could not withstand the impetuosity of tho
Chilian attack and after a stubborn flulit
givvo way. Falling back already enfeebled
the right wing aginst the Chilian force
double his own and tho Chilian artillery
five times stronger than his own Monlero
could not hope to win and
was finally compelled to rutire
before tho victorious Chilians and leave
Tacana to its tate. After this disaitcr fol-
lowed Arrica. Almost as soon as the
Chilians had reorganized their armv they
sent 0000 men under Goneral Uuguedans to
Lienta by rail. Arica was summoned to
surrender. The answer was: "Not until the
lastcartridiro is fired!" The l'cruvians made
evory preparation for the Chilians in front

WINS EXPLOSION
An explosion occurred at twenty minutes
past one this morning in tho London and .
South Wales Colliery company's new black
vein pit at Rises six miles from Newport.
The shock was violent. It it tupposed 119
men were in the pit at the time and there is
scarcely a probability that any will be saved.
One body Las been found at tbe bottom of
tbe shaft. Ventilation it being restored in
tbe mine wltb a view to exploring for the
bodies. - .
A dispatch from Cardiff taysone hundred
and twenty-eight men were in the pit of tho
Xionaon os oouia rvaiet coiuery company's
mine at the time of the explosion and it is
believed all have perished.
Tno explosion occurred at twenty minutes
paBt one o'clock. At about eight o'clock
the bodies of three ot the unfortunate miners
were found lie r the bottom of the shaft
but tbey have not yet been brought up. Tho
turce 01 me explosion wss ternuc oiowmg
to atoms the ventilating fan and cast it up in
the air. There is no hope that the men be-
low can exist. Ventilation below is beine
resorted to with a view of exploring in search
of tbe unfortunato miners. The rcenes about
the mines is reported as heartrending. There
is a large throng present composed in great
part of iclativcs and friends of the im-
prisone l miners. Among them are many
women bewailing the fate of huebandl and
sous whilo little children aro asking anxiously
concerning thoir fathers. Everything pos-
sible is being done to expedite tho roltmse of
tho men but scarcely anyone hopes to find
one of the miners alive.
Another account of tho colliery explosion
at Kisica gives the number of men in tho pit
at the tiuio at 104. Three bodies thus far
have been recovered.
5:30 p. m. The Cardiff correspondent of
tho press association telegraphs as follows :
There is some confusion regarding the num-
ber of mon in the pit. lteeent calculation
lessens it to eighty but I am informed that it
is not impossible that over two hundred col-
liers had none down. The pit is 280 yards
deep. All the machinery was new but the
black vein seam is an old one and is well
known in connection with previous explo-
sions ono of which in 1800 killed 145
persons.
A careful examination of tho company's
books show that 120 men descended into tho
pit for the night's shift. Sir Wm. Uarcourt
home secretary replying to an inquiry in the
hoaso of commons to-day says tie believed
118 men perished by the explosion.
