power as well as they who like Ben Butler
voted for Jeff Davis in the Charleston con-
vention of 1860. Tboy .were the life-long
place-holders. Ti ey had held the country's
offices except three years while Fillmore
was president through forty years. They
saw '-Mene mene tekel upharein" inscribed
above every doorway to every profitable po-
sition under the government When
Lincoln came their doom was
sealed. Tney were . unanimously
for war. How they came howling from
Washington over tbe mountains down into
the cotton and rice fields of the south! They
set up the confederacy and every man of
them went into a hole at Montgomery or at
Richmond or found a marsbalsnip or post-
offico precisely like those from which they
had been ejected by the woful election of
Lincoln. War was necc siary to perpetuate
this southern tenure of place and power
and Fort Sumter was fired on
and the whole people of the
south rather than cut the throats of
neighbors and endure the hororsof intestine
internecine strife went into tbe ranks; and it
is a fact which the north does not under-
stand that the fighting in the south and the

These had no access to .the ear or kinalinets
of power. Thoso who had asserted the follies
and crimes;of Davis andYancy and of the
fiery ferocious Bob Toombs were
loth to ask for offices and
honors at' itheir hand. Thciefore it
happened that at the close of the rirst year
of the war it was found in a southern city
that of 1132 gentlemen who had published
their names ai "minute men" and original
per se blood drinking secessionists only
forty-two were in the confederate states army
and each of these had a sott place. Not one
of them ever handled a spade or bore a mus-
ket. The mania for place and oilice pursued
the secession party to its death and it was
this mania that made Lincoln's election a
casus belli.
WHY BBS. BCTLKH BETRAYED DAVIS.
If Ben. Butler had lived in South Carolina
as he did in Massachusetts he too would
have been perfectly blest and held a high
placeat Richmond. B it when Davis and his
coterie of statesmen expelled from Washing-
ton were rolyinfr for mora' and even active
support upon Butler and Logan and many
like them these shrewdor than
honest accepted proffered honors that
were ever aiven for treason to
personal history and declarations by the
adroit president Abraham Lincoln.
And thus it happened that Butler himseir
and his old friends the old Democrajy in
their own history and acts have illustrate.1
the absolute necessity for the occtsional ex-
pulsion of parties from power. Therefore
the wisdom of that constitutional decree pro-
viding for quadrionniul presidential elections.
AN AUSUM) STATKMKXT OF OARFIHLD.
Garfield's adherents are apt to say that
those fellows that sought to destroy the union
should not be invented with office. The patent
reply is that even if tbe southern people pre-
fer secessionists to unionists it is because
these will never more "rebel." God knows
they had enoueh of it. They could not be
hired by Ben Butler to attempt a task ab-
surd originally as infinitely wicked now.
Then they had a pretext in the dread that
slavery might be tampered with; now they
could not be induced to re-establish slavery.
They make more cotton and rice and sugar
and tobacco with free than slave labor and
when an African shuffles off this mortal coil
there is no bribe of $1200 or $1600 for tears
at bis grave.
1T3 HOLLO WNI8S.
Southern people are only amazed when
they listen to Garfield's comically solemn
declarations that the union or the negro
would ba endangered by Democratic
success. The confederacy was such a flat
failure and its death such a "collapse' of
unutterable hollowness that no human in-
tellect c m conceive of an inducement that
would impel even an original secessionist to re-
enact absurdities of 1860-6 and the union and
the constitution and tbe laws of the isevita-
hie "nigger" will never be as safe or as ten-
derlv guarded in the hands of perfectly irre-
fragable conservatism as when the govern-
ment lapses into the hands of Ben Butlers
old co-labcrers. the original simon pure Jeff
Davis secessionist. 1
