Big Day, Little Nose....
This is the week of July ■*.
Since fireworks are now consid-
ered too dangerous for sale in-
side city limits, the holiday has
lost much of its—glitter. —Inde*
pendence Day was always Bang
Day much as Thanksgiving
means turkey and Memorial Day
means flans.
« StilL (t is It pity that the birth'
day of our republic passe* with
so little to mark it. The blood-
letting of an Occasfbrial automo
bile accident is the only cause
for excitement. . -
July 4 is a day almost unique
in history. It marks the begin-
ning of a people's successful
.fight for freedom, a revolution
which made good in a way few
other revolutions hSve succeed-
ed in making good. .5 . : ~~
For our revolution is not the
only one in modern history. The
English revolution of the 1640's
the French revolution of 1789
the Russion revolution of 1917,
all began with the same general
aim. For one reason or another,
all failed, although liberty ia
England and France grew "un-
derground until it bore fruit
years later.
Perhaps the very age of our
liberties is what m.ikes them so
difficult for so many citizens to
understand, ptherwise, why do
numerous patroits argue today
over what these liberties mean
and how to preserve them.

claims. They say these men were
religious or antl-clerical, cen-
tralists or states lighters, na-
tionalists or internationalists. An
objective—reading—of— hi
shows they are all correct; the
Founding Fathers were divided
in their views.
Today men argue over with-

to pray or not to pray in public
schools. When these questions
are settled, there will be others.
This is the very essence of our
democracy.
Still, all the hotly^arguing pa-
triots are agreed on two things:
their love of America and their
love of liberty. It is a pity that
the only day on which .they
might bury their differences and
together praise this land of free-
dom. July 4, passes with little
fanfare.
