Winners of the 1917 Garden Awards
A-
CCORDING to the provisions for the 1917 War Garden awards,
only those scouts were eligible who successfully operated War
• Gardens themselves and induced nine others to do the same.
Under these conditions 214 scouts qualified for and will receive the
Medal. The names and troops of these valiant Grub Scouts is given
below with our heartiest congratulations.
In addition to these 214 boys who were able to meet the require-
ments in full, there were thousands of others who served well and
faithfully by carrying on Gardens themselves, or helping their parents
and friends do so; by working on farms, in orchards and berry fields,
and in canning factories. Every one of these may well feel proud
of his contibution to the business of war winning through food con-
servation and production.
The same work, on an even larger scale, is being done this year and it is hoped that an even better showing will be made under
the slightly different and more inclusive conditions offered by the 1918 award, as published in the Garden and Equipment edition
. If there are still 1917 reports which are not in, scoutmasters should make haste to repair the omission that full credit mav be
given every Scout.

A parade such as this in which the Harrisburg, Pa., scouts took part, is worth little to the boys or their community unless it is backed up by genuine
preparedness and service. When the splendid discipline shown in the marching is demonstrated also in knot tying, estimating heights and distances,
fire building without matches, demonstrating life saving methods, pyramid building, log and tree chopping, semaphore signalling and first aid as it was
in Harrisburg on July 4, 1918, the community realises that in the scouts it has a valuable civic asset. Hon. H. 0. Bechtel, Presiding Judge of Schuyl-
kill County, voiced the sentiment of the entire district in an address of welcome to the troops assembled for the first annual meet of the Schuylkill
County Boy Scouts of America
