1,000th Broadcast For
Lum N Abner; On KXOX
Sweetwater Reporter, Sweetwater, Texas
Wednesday, April 17# 1.946
April 18 marks the day, one
thousand broadcasts ago, that
Chester Lauck and Norris "Tuf-
f.v" Goff (Lum and Ahner) made
their first recording for the Key-
stone Broadcasting System and
radio station KXOX, local KISS
affiliate.
Those two homespun charact-
ers, Lum anil Abner, came into
being back in 1931 at Hot Springs
Arkansas, where Chet and Tuft v
were participating in a benefit
flood relief radio program. Ori-
ginally, they'd planned to do a
blackface act. which they'd wor-
ked out over a period of years
for amateur performances. Hut
when they arrived at the studio,
they discovered every otherVotn
edy team which was to appear on
•the show had had the same idea.
Making a quick .switch, they de-
cided to become typical Arkansas
characters, strictly of the rust;
variety. And just because he'd
never heard of anyone named
"Lum," Chet decided that was
who he'd be. Tufty quickly recal-
led an old man named "Abner,"
and so Lum '11 Abner came into
being.
Many of the characters who
have become a part of the daily
gathering at the Jot 'Km Down
Store and Library, where the
two old storekeepers hold forth,
were drawn from actual people
in the small town of Waters. Ark-
ansas. So popular did the Jot
'Km Down Store become with
the radio audiences that in
the people of the community
sent a formal request to the Post
Office Department in Washing-
ton. D. C., to have the name of
MILLIONS ARE GtlDED

St. Joseph Aspirin, world's largest seller
at 10c. Get 100 tablet s:zu for only 3oc.
I the town legally changed to I'ine
Ridge.
Since Pine Itidge has become
identified with the Lum 'n Ab-
ner show. Dick Huddleston, op-
erator of the general store there
and the only actual personality
to be literally portrayed on the
radioes swamped with tourists
from far and wide who drop by
during the year to glimpse the
actual locale of the famous radio
township.
Chet and Tuffy are practically
a two-man show, each of them
portraying most of the charact-
ers on the program. In addition,
to Lum. Chet enacts the back-
ward Cedric Weehunt, and crot-
chets Urundpappv Spears. On the
other hand Tuffs slips with the
greatest of case into the role of
formidable Squire Skimp, shv
M ousey Gray, Ulysses S. Quiiiey,
and practical Dick Huddleston.
It's seldom that the women-
folk of the town are heard on
the air. Those invisible and sil-
ent members of the group, by
popular acclaim, must depend al-
most entirely on their develop-
ment through the eyes of the
male contingency. ,lu.>t once was
an actress engaged to portray
the role of 'Lizabeth, Aimer's
wife. And such a storm of pro-
test ensued from radio listeners,
who much preferred to form
their own impressions of their
familiar character, the two stars
decided to give up the whole I
idea.
j Chet and Tuffy came to Holly- j
j wood, and the movies, in 1937. j
j To date, they have six pictures j
j to their credit, the latest of
will !

WASHINGTON (UP) — Rep-
resentative Francis Case of
South Dakota has introduced
legislation into the house to
create a 500.0(10 man United
States foreign legion to take care
of the nation's overseas police
task.
The proposed legion would
consist of aliens and jvould have
a special status within the Unit-
ed States armed, forces. Not more
thon one-fifth would be of the
same nationality. It's members
would be recruited to serve for
at least five years anywhere in
the world at the pay rates of
I'nited States soldier citizens
with no Ik.inus for overseas pay
or rights within the CI Hill of
lights.
Case says he goi his idea from
the French Foreign Legion and
believ es such a force cottldlie re-
cruited quickly. The measure
would provide for indoctrination
of the foreign legionnaires in
the ideals of Ilie United Stales
during their service. At (he end
of (he five years, they would be
eligible for naturaliz
to take cases of beer from (lie
basement of a brewers' without

The hall was knocked off a

the fact thai il hit the tire of a
passing truck. That, in turn, put
the ball through its paces in a

through a plate glass window in
a grocery store across the street.
The store ossner wants some-
