Worst Moment
INDIANAPOLIS —(CP) —
We've all had moments we
wouldn't care to live over again,
and George I'oske is no excep-
tion.
The Indianapolis man's woes
| began when he was about to get
i out of the police car of his
I friend, inspector Jacobs. Busy
! thanking Jacobs for the "lift",
j Poske didn't wacth his step.
As a result, he stepped on a
button which operates the offic-
er's siren. And he was so dumb-
| founded as the siren screeched
and the downtown traffic pulled
to the curb, that he sat with his
foot frozen on the-button.
The commotion died down
| when inspector Jacobs reached
'down and lifted Poske's foot off
1 the button.
Six Key Scientists
In Atom Laboratory
Hurt By Radiation .
LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico.
I UP (Security officials have re-
vealed further information re-
garding an accident Tuesday
afternoon at the Los Alamos,
New Mexico, atomic bomb labora-
tory. And the names of eight in-
jured persons have been disclos-
ed.
The serenity office says six
of the nation's leading scien-
tists and two members of
the laboratory engineering
staff were exposed to radia-
tion during work with the
fissionable material.
Thirty-five-year-old Dr. Louis
of Slotin of Winnipeg, who dis-|
persed the material ai the time'
of the accident, was "possibly"
seriously exposed to the radia-'
tiotl. His quick action was credit-1
ed with prevention possible
greater injury to fellow scientists
participating in the operation.
Others were expose;: to radia-
tion in varying degrees. All are
expected to be released from the
United States Engineer's Hos-1
pital at Los Alamos after a
throuough check and period of j
observation.
I)r. Norris Bradbury, the pro
Meet director, says the mishap
will not affect the projected Hik-
j ini tests.
Dr. Ramer Scheiber. 3fi-year
old LaFayette, Indiana, man, was
! listed as one of three key scien-
tists in the a-bomb laboratories
i who were exposed to the radia
j tion.
