Commission Sets Date For

I recommended a change in the
shooting of waterfowl.
The commission, at a regular
j quarterly meeting, maintained
the status quo or the length of
I season and bag limits on mourn-
ing dove and white-wing dove.
The staggered white-wing sea-
son was set for Sept. 17, 19 and
21, with shooting from 4 p. m.
to sunset. The bag limit on both
white-wing and mourning dove
remains the same, 10 a day and
10 in possession.
But the commission recom-

mended to the U. S. Fish and
Wildlife Service that a 35-dav
continuous season on migratory
waterfowl ducks, geese, brant*
and coot—be observed, instead
of the spiit season in effect in
1917.
No Set Dates
The commission did not rec-
| ommend any specific dates for
the 35-day season. Such a sea-
| son would replace the split sea-
] son set in 1947, when shooting
j extended from Nov. 4 to Nov.
! 17 and from Dec. 16 to Dec. 29.
| The commission also recom-
I mended that the bag limit be
! increased on ducks and geese
from four to eight per day.
Federal regulations are ex-
i pected to be issued in August.
The same zones were set for

hunting of mourning dove, with
the north zone running north of
a line running roughly north-
east from Maverick to Sabine
County, and the south zone
south of that line.
Dates set for the north zone
were from Sept. 1 to Oct. 15,
with hunting in the south zone
from Oct. 20 to Dec. 3. The dates
were identical with those in ef-
fect in 1947.
Antelope Hunt
The following dates were set
for the regulated antelope hunt
west of the Pecos:
Brewster, Jeff Davis, Pecos
and Reeves counties, Oct. 1, 2
and 3; Presidio cxunty, Oct. 5,
6 and 7: Presidio and Jeff
Davis counties, Oct. 8, 9 and 10; j
and Hudspeth and Culberson !
counties, Oct. 12, 13 and 14.
The antelope hunt is operated
on a permit basis by the com-
mission. Last year some 700 per-
mits were issued by the com-
mission, and hunters killed al-
most 600 antelope. However, of-
ficials envisioned a decrease in
the number of permits to be is-
sued for the 1948 hunt.
The commission also took un- j
der advisement the request of j
a coastal sportsmen's group,
which asked that a channel be
dredged to connect San Anto-
nio Bay with Matagorda Bay.
