out Vernon
Again As Peeler Homers
Bill Peeler broke a 7-7 dead-
lock with a home run in the
ninth inning last night as the
Sweetwater Swatters defeated
Vernon's Dusters 8 to 7 in the
second thrilling game in as many
nights at Sportsman Park.
Vernon and Sweetwater battle
again here tonight at 8 o'clock.
Roswell will be here Saturday
and Sunday for a clash with the
Swatters. Saturday night's
game will begin at 8:30 and Sun-
day's contest starts at 9 p. m.
The Dusters took a 3-0 lead in
the very first inning last night
and then added another run in
the second. It looked for awhile
as if the Dusters were going to
pay the Swatters back for
Wednesday night's defeat.
Lefty Craig, former Swatter
hurler, was on the mound for
Vernon. He was stingy with his
hits. Of the six hits he gave up
before being relieved in the
seventh, five of them were of the
infield variety. In fact the Swat-
ters didn't hit a ball to the out-
field until the sixth.
But Craig still walks too many
batters. In the third, he walked
three Swatters. This, coupled
with a Duster error, accounted
for two Sweetwater runs.
A walk and two infield bing-
les in the fifth made it three
runs for the Swatters. Vernon
tallied one run in their half of
the fifth and the score read, 5-3.
The Swatters tied the game up
in the sixth, 5-5, on a single to
center field by Lou Lockhart
and two successive infield hits
by Peeler and Jarech. But the
IPS
BILL PEELER
.... Bis ninth-inning home run
did the trick for Sweetwater
last night.
Dusters weren't satisfied and
made the score read 7-5 in the
eighth. Sweetwater came right
back and tied the game up again
as Jarech hit a homer, Cuitti
singled and Bartolomei doubled.
And then Peeler came forth
in the ninth with his circuit
clout. The ball skimmed over
the right field fence by inches.
Manager Huntley of Vernon
relieved Fernandez in the eighth.
Lockhart went the route for
Sweetwater, giving up nine hits.
The Swatters got ten hits off
Craig, Fernandez and Huntley.
Manager Kermit Lewis was
ousted from the playing field by
Umpire Sykes in the first inn-
ing. Lewis protested a called
third strike. Sykes, who delights
in thumbing ball players, point-
ed to the gate.

Amarillo's Gold Sox went on
one of the biggest run-making
sprees ir.i the modern history of
organized ball last night.
The Sox pulverized the La-
mesa Loboes, 30 to 7, scoring
three runs in the first, four in
the third, one in the fourth, 10
in the sixth, seven in the sev-
enth and five in the eighth.
Altogether Amarillo got 24
hits off nine Lamesa pitchers
who tried to stop th£ West Tex-
as-New Mexico League orgy.
Lubbock, which dropped into
the second division after once
rearing first place, manhandled
the league leading Albuquerque
Dukes, 12 to 1, in another dis-
play of hitting power.
Borger set Abilene down, 6 to
2, with Elton Davis giving up
seven hits to the second-place
Blue Sox.
Pampa rounded out the night's
play by edging Clovis, 8 to 7.

ling the first year men by En-

Fort Worth Loses
Again; Tuba Wins
Over Shreveport
By United Press
The tough San Antonio Mis-
sions were making life miserable
for the Fort Worth Cats today.
After taking a series from the
Cats in the Alamo City, the
Padres moved into Fort Worth
last night and downed the Texas
League leaders, 7 to 2. The loss
cut Fort Worth's margin over
Tulsa to two and one-half games.
Johnny Pavlick held the Cats
to seven hits. Pat Seerey of the
Missions homered in the ninth
with one on to add a fitting post-
script to the victory.
Tulsa celebrated Fort Worth's
loss by shutting out the Shreve-
port Sports, 6 to 0. Frank Smith
yielded only two hits in chalking
up the victory.
Oklahoma City romped over
Beaumont, 11 to 1, behind Dick
Rozek's seven-hit pitching. Herb
Conyers highlighted a six-run
Indian splurge in the bottom of
the second with a grand slam
homer and Randy Jackson crash-
ed one in the sixth with one on.
Dallas turned loose its trio of
home-run hitters and beat Hous-
ton 5 to 2. Ben Guintini hit his
29th round-tripper of the year,
(his ninth in the past 12 games)
Bill Serena got his 23rd, and Jer-
ry Witte boosted his total in that
department to 38. Walt Lanfran-
coni kept Houston's four hits
well scattered.
Dinfy Moore Hurls
No-Hit Ball Game
For Austin Club
AUSTIN, Tex., Aug. 19 (UP)
—The Austin Pioneer's Dinty
Moore today boasted the first
nine-inning no-hit game in the
history of the Big State League.
In a 5-1 victory over the
Greenville Majors, the slim
righthander last night pitched
the first no-hitter in Disch field
and the first in the league's an-
nals.
However, a perfect game was
missed in the third inning when
the Majors put together two
straight walks, a sacrifice and
a long fly ball into right field to
score Ed Post with their only
run.

ORANGE AFTER l)AKK
SYRACUSE, N. Y. (NEA) —
Syracuse will play three night
football games this fall, against
Boston University, Lafayette and
Temple at Archibold Stadium.
TWO GOOD GAMES
The first two games of the
present eight-day baseball series
at Sportsman Park were thrillers.
The Swatters copped both con-
tests by one-run margins. And
both games were tied up in the
ninth inning.
Little Billy Peeler won the
game last night for Sweetwater.
With the score deadlocked at 7-
7 going into the bottom of the
ninth, Peeler clouted his second
home run of the season. He was
the first batter up in the ninth.
Bob Huntley was the Duster
pitcher.
Lefty Craig of Vernon return-
ed to Sportsman Park last night
and had the Swatters hog-tied for
several innings. He struck out
seven. But he couldn't maintain
control and walked eight Swat-
ters. That was his downfall.
However, Huntley was the los-
ing pitcher.
It's Vernon aagin here tonight
game time at 8 o'clock. The Ros-
well Rockets come here for two
games. Saturday night's contest
will start at 8:30. Sunday's game
begin at 9 p. m.
The Swatters have 25 games
left on their '49 schedule — 13
here and 12 away.

Yankees' Pitchers
Finally Get Started
NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UP) -
There was pride in Casey's bear-
ing and a smile on Casey's face
today as the pitching woes which
beset his New York Yankees
seemed to fade away.
For a while the mound men-
ials were making a specialty of
mediocre play, leaving Casey
Stengel's Yanks fitful and falter-
ing as the Boston Red Sox crept
menacingly closer with every
game. Bob Porterfield was down
in Newark, rrursing a sore shoul-
der. Vic Raschi won game No.
15 and then, it appeared, began
devoting the rest of his life in
flailing efforts to get 16. Even
as late as the recent Philadelphia
series it took 11 Yankee pitch-
ers to play five ball games.
But now things have taken a
turn for the better. Porterfield
is back on the Varsity, and has
pitched two good games, win-
ning one. Raschi finally copped
No. 16, and a six-hitter at that,
Wednesday night.
And now Stengel has even
found a way for Allie Reynolds
to finish a game—simply not let
him start it until the fifth in-
ning.
That may sound ludicrous, but
it's exactly what Stengel did
yesterday and it produced vic-
tory, 5 to 4, over Washington.
Reynolds went in in the fifth
and did not allow a hit during
the five frames he pitched;
he fanned five. The winning run
came in the sixth on Phil Riz-
zuto's double and Cliff Mapes'
single.
