Gels Life Term
In Slaying Case
DALLAS, Jan. 18—UP—Keith
Petersen, former Southern Metho-
dist. University journalism student,
Tuesday faced a life sentence in
prison lor the slaying ol his sweet-
heart in 1949.
Attorneys for the 26-year-old son
of a well-to-do Dallas family, in a
surprise move, entered the guilty
plea soon after the blond youth
went on trial for the shooling oi
Carolyn Sehofield on Sept. 2, 1949,
after she spurned his love.
Judge Henry King handed down \
the sentence in criminal district j
court Monday.
Petersen shot Miss Sehofield four
^mfcs with u .38-ealiber revolver;
™ a downtown office building.
At thai time, the defense pleaded
insanity. At the sanity triai, Peter-
sen was found sane at the lime of
the slaying, but insane al ihe lime
of the trial. He was a patient in!
Terrell and Rusk mental hospitals
until recently when he was de-
clared sane and was returned to
Dallas to stand trail on Ihe old
murder charge.
District Attorney Henry Wade
prosecuted the case. He had
Vanned to call a large number of
witnesses. Defense attorneys also
had indicated plans to call more
than tiO witnesses. The trial had
been expected to be one of the
longest in Dallas county history.
The agreement on the life term
came as a complete surprise. The
opposing attorneys had spent con-
siderable time arguing over selec-
tion of a jury after the trial was
called Monday alternoon.
But. suddenly both sides agreed
O) take the first 12 names on the
jury list and accept the group. The
jury was empaneled and told of
agreement to plead guilty and ac-
cept a life term.

Snowden pouted Friday the last
thing she wants is to be "another
Marilyn Monroe."
Already anatomy experts are
comparing 22-year old Leigh to the
original Marilyn. Leigh has the
same Monroe wide eyes, dimpled
chin, open mouth and curves, only
in a smaller edition.
"But I don't want to be called a
Monroe. I'd rather be called a good
actress," wailed Leigh.
"I don't want to get by on figure,
sex and looks. Sooner or later
that leaves you, and then what
do you do?"
Leigh steamed up TV screens
when she first appeared with Ben-
ny six weeks ago. On the program
she walked into the comedian's of-
fice, perched on his lap and kissed
him. Later when Benny staged his
Christmas program at a Navy
base. Leigh turned tiis show into
shambles. All slje did was swivel-
hip across the stage but 10,000 sai- j
lors cheered.
"Some of them told me they:
thought I was Monroe,'' she ad-
mitted. "It's true I hardly ever j

as a model for a year and then a j
job to reign as queen of a sports- j

"My ambition was to sing light ■
opera. Being an actress never en-[

She made her debut on Ihe "Mr. j

MEXICO CITY, Jan. 18—UP—
i Martin Irving Lipstein, California
1 teacher who arrived here to marry j
his Mexican girl friend, said Tues-
day he was held by Panama City
authorities in connection with their
President's assassination because
he was mistaken for a Chicago
gangster.
Lipsteon said he will remain in
Mexico six more months, after be-
ing married to Isabel Alsono, 33,
Mexican telephone company oper-
ator.
He said the "big mistake" that
led to his arrest as a suspect in
the Jan. 1 machinegun slaying of
President Jose Antonio Remon
was his going to Panama City air-
port with dirty clothes.
He said the clothes had been
worn aboard an Italian freighter;
and "they mistook me lor a gang-;
: ster from Chicago. Now I'm glad
this is all over."
