By BARBARA STANWYCK
HOLLYWOOD —UP— Acting is
a profession, not a ride on a se-
quinned merry-go-round. Those
who sponsor the Cinderella stories
are doing starry-eyed kids a great
disservice.
Actually those who hit overnight
are, in a sense, too lucky for their
own good. Perhaps our inexper-
ienced fledgling will have a direc-
tor who will lead her gently
through each scene, spoon-feeding
her every line and inflection, steer-
ing her step by step.
Maybe she won't be so fortunate
in her next picture. That director
may turn his actors loose with
only a suggestion here and there.
It is sheer disaster for the inex-
perienced starlet who can only
flouder helplessly.
If you really want to be a screen
actress, first learn to be an
actress. Get yourself on a stage
— in school plays, college plays,
little theaters, amateur groups.
Work before a different audience
every night, learn timing, deliv-
ery, how to draw the desired re-
action from every type of au-
dience — whether it be enthusias-
tic, cooperative, or just plain
lousy. No movie set could intimi-
date a gal who has run a gamut
of thankless roles and-or assorted
audiences.
On the stage you learn to make
each performance your best.
"I can't tell you how to get into
pictures. I can only tell you what
I've learned about learning to be
an actress. And I'm still trying to
learn. When you've learned all
that you think you can learn,
you're just starting.
Acting is a business and your
conduct should prove you know
this fact. Skip phony flights of
temperament. Skip the idea that
you-knpw-it-all. The men on any
set know their trades. You can
learn something from each of
them. Ask questions. Keep learn-
ing your profession.
Every aspiring actress should
get as much education as possible.
The opportunity to do this was not
mine. Though formal schooling is
the best method, is is not the only
method.
Libraries, studies available
through university extension train,
ing programs, night schools -•
there are a dozen ways to achieve
education. Success stories about
people whose education was lim*
ited prove that they did not stop
learning when they stopped going
to school.
Respect your work and respect
yourself. Be professional. The good
actress is hard - working, a con.
stantly improving craftsman.
Just be sure you have the one
great gift, without which all the
enthusiasm and devotion to duty
are unavailing. That gift is talent
Even a very small talent can be
developed. You can get around nol
being a beauty, not having the fig-
ure of a goddess. But talent, sister,
you got to have.
