City of Antiquity. - ^
Founded before famous cities which
nourished uisny centuries ago and
hkh have ' ng since cased to exist,
cuch as Ba\*^ Tun 1 Nineveh, Tyre
and Sidon and Sodom and Gomorrah,
iind oi'der than any of the cities of
it? region or of Persia, 'Igypt, Grewce.
India and the Mongolian nations, Da-
mascus undoubtedly is 'he oldest city
In the world. The founding of Damas-
cus is veiled by the haze of the re-
motest antiqui'.y, but investigators of
the subject have declared that Shein,
eldest son of Noah, was the founder.
Korean Religion.
Nowhere is the great antiquity of
Korean civilization so clearly shown
a? In the talnds of their religious be-
liefs. The all-around Korean, when
in society, is a f'onfucianist; he is a
Buddhist when lie philosophizes, and
a spirit worshiper when he is in trou-
ble. His religion is one of dragons,
devils, elves, imps and goblins, in
which the spirits of dead humanity
are hero and there present; where
eteuial shades walk about; in which
hills, trees and rivers—even diseases
—have personalities bearing woes and
cerrors to all men.

Algerian Women Did Well.
In no countries have the barriers
which have hedged women in ben
broken down to a larger extent by the
war tliaji in Mohammedan countries.
The women in Algiers took charge of
*hP estates of their husbands, who had
^one to fight, or who, in many cases,
had gone to France to work in muni-
tions plants and factories for higher
wages than those they could command
jit home. The women seem to have
used their new independence well.
They subscribed heavily to the gov-
ernment loans.

To Preserve CiothWig.
Men's and women's clothing Is often
discarded before it is worn out be-
cause of the objectionable "shine"
which appears on material after a
short time. This condition can be
remedied by sponging the shiny places
on the garment ^fith pure vinegar
boiling hot. Hub the vinegar into the
material plentifully and vigorously.
Then press with pressing iron as
usual. This process should be repeat
ed whenever the shine reappears.—

Good Word for Pussy.
Brave Little Bob has received many
injunctions to be "manly," the word
being used to mean to go about his
business bravely and quietly and In n
sell-respecting manner. The other day
Sob's pet cat was suspected of some
weakling misdemeanor and Bol> rose
to the rescue in a hurry. "I'm sure
she never did it, mamma," he ex-
clsimed Indignantly. "She'd never
flunk of acting In such a manner. She
Is a very manly cat."
Have Strong Hold on Life.
Even earth worms are among the
creatures that can lie dovmant In a
dried-up state. I'eter Schmidt reports
that when desiccated to 40 per cent
of their non utl weight, shrinking to
a half or a third of natural length and
volume, they may be r-'Stored to ac-
tive life after 39 hours m summer or
48 hours or more in the <-old.
History Repeats Itself.
Briggs and Fowler were talking of
the great wars fought in the days
when the world was considerably
younger. "You know." said Brigsrs "it
always seems to me that those old
warriors were very much like oui
modern financiers." "What do y*iu
mean?" asked Fowler. "Well they j
were always investing some one (!se'.« j
j capital, weren't they?"

Munich in History.
With the history of Munich the
name Louis is inseparable. It was
Louis the Severe who. In the thir-
teenth cent'.:cy, gave the city a start
by living there. ;.i:d Emperor Louis,
the Bavarian, next in succession, who
built the first city wall. The city;
owes its beginning to I>uke Henry the
Lion, who established a mint there In
115S and built a bridge across the
Isar so he might levy toll on the salt
from springs of Relchenhall and
neighboring villages. Ihe. city occu-
pies the site of the ancient monastery
Tegernseo. hence its name (munichen,
the monk).
Possible Origin of "Loafer."
An old Dutchman in New York had
the misfortune to have a shiftless
young American fall In love with his
daughter. He disapproved of this and
used to say to her. "Here comes that
'lofer' of yours, the idle good for noth-
ing." How the "a" got into the word
is not known, but an Idle man banging
aronnd came to be called a "loafer."
