Secession Fever Dies—
The secession fever generated
recently by Hidalgo, Willacy,
Cameron and Starr counties in
the Rio Grande Valley has ap-
parently died down. Another
day or two and the plan will be
as dead as it should be—even
with the perpetrators. The
only advantageous point to be
found in splitting Texas into
two or several states would lie
in an excuse for reorganization
of state government based on
a new constitution providing
for a more responsible execu-
tive, a more powerful uni-
cameral legislature, and an in-
jfga dependent judiciary. True as it
is" that a state as vast as Texas
is difficult to unify on certain
issues, this is still not a good
excuse for splitting up the
state, because the growth of
. population and the faster meth-
bf communication and
station will eventually
tdo away with this sectionaliza-
tkm. The other big talking
point—politically—is <• that as
several; states the Southwest
tfpold have more power in the
l&terfel Government.

Example of Sectionalism—
The forthcoming guberna-
torial election which will bring
on a hot race between Thomp-
son and McCraw msay find its
solution in sectionalized vote
Tfoe former Amiarillo mayor is
known to be a strong West
| > Texas favorite, while, on the
other hand, East Texas has
always supported Attorney Gen-
eral McCraw, and will more
than likely give him a big vote
majority this year.

Mann For New Constitution—
Gerald Mann, candidate for
attorney general, in a recent
radio talk sponsored by South-
ern Methodist University, con-
demned the state's horse and
buggy constitution, pointing
out the expense and cumber-
someness of the present set-up.
The only way to cure present
maladjustments in state gov-
ernment is to get at the root
of the evil . . . and that root
is definitely an out-of-date
constitution that was drawn
up in the 1875 period of reac-
tion against the atrocities of
the carpet-bag regime and ap-
proved the following year by the
people who felt that anything
was better than what they had.
The personnel of the constitu-
tional convention was only
average but their work was
hardly that, as we have since
seen. And at that time the
legislative and executive
branches were held in great
distrust, the effects of which
does not make their work any
