MAJOR rF.XX'8 ItEYIVAL MEET-
IXUS IX DALLAS. 1
Urcnt Good AcrompliNhcd-The Bap.
Hat t'hnrch lHUiciiltlrs.
Mjor I'enn has just closed one ot the
most interesting and successful revivals ever
inaugurated in Dallas if not in the state
and.left for southern Texas jester lay morn-
ing. It would be utterly impossible lor us
to co ioto all the detailsand give the public
the grand result attained.
As has been very generally known through-
out the state the Baptist church in this
place has been experiencing great trouble
occasioned by the objections ol'Kev. U. M.
Buckner to the reception of Dr. Link into
the church resulting in a split in tho
churches.
Early in Ootobor when Major Penn came
to Dallas upon the invitation of the Curry
Baptist church and tho ptstors
of other denominations in Dulim
and a Humorously signed petition
of the citizens he opened his meetings in his
great tent. After meeting with some success
he folt that the B 'ptiut difficulties wero in the
way of still groater success so he inaugurated
tho" move looking to a reconciliation and set-
tlement of the dilticulties butwrcn the two
parties claiming to be the First Uuptst
church. For awhile the prospects looked
flattering to the great joy and delight of all
true lovers of Christianity. Tho ttTort having
failed and Major Venn boliev-
ing that the Curry churct had
done all it could do in the promises and was
not responsible for tho failure to reconcile
matters stated publicly giving it as big
opinion that the Curry church was the First
Baptist church and the only white Baptist
church in Dallas. The propitious of both
sides woro published in tho IIkbald about
that time.
Tho meetings continuod to grow in interest
and warmth the largest crowds attending
daily and nightly ever before known in any
religious gathering in Dallas. From fifty to
ono hundred and Mfty tilled the enquirers
seats nightly and as fu.t as professions wore
made ttior places on those seats were filled
by other enquirers. The ineotings were kept
up for five woeks seeming never to ftll
olT in attdiiiatic but on the contrary
seemed to increase in effect. When
the cold snowy and rainy
weather set in the meotings had to closa
at the tent and it was taken down. It may
ba said tho last two muotings hoi 1 '.here wero I
simply immense. On Wednesday Major :
Penn ran up to MuKinney and tha'. nignt
Kov. Mr. Curry hold services at tho Baptist ;
church with quito a crowd present. Six pro- j
fussed religion at that meeting. Thursday '
Major I'enn havina returned he preached !
that nigNt to tlio largest crowd in the Btp-!
tist ohurch building over beforo assembled
within its walls and it maj bo said tUa j
most interef ting. Before leaving Mr Penn'.
still fooling unwilling to leave Dallas without I
effecting a settlement of the Baptist dillicul-!
ties and tlio Curry church participating in j
his feelings determined to makn another

still another proposition which will bo found
further on.
Up to tho closo of the meetings thre had
boon about 325 prolessions Beveral of whom
were backsliders Of this number of cover's
eighty-seven have joined Mr. Curry's church
besides somo thirty or forty more who will join
the same church. Tho balanco will with
a ine exceptions join the vari u-d snomina
tions in Dallas. A number will
also join tho church in the
country. Tho Dallas Baptist church
by no means a woa'i ono despite the disaffec-
tion that caused a division boforo Major Peon's
conuag is now ono of tho s.rongest Baptist
entireties' in tho stato and its influence will
be telt far and wido. But t is sad to know
that tho dilllculties have not yet boon settleilj
till there ought to be s ime hope that a re-
union of the 1) tptists shall yot take placo.
The Curry wing of the church n is made
snothor proposition to tho other wing of the
churcn wnuli reads as lollows:
"Wner as T:ie etfjrt recently made to
recjni'iln and establish peace anil brotherly
love aiming the Baptists of D dlas has proven
1 1 be a failure and
herons this disaffection among us has
been 'reductive of much evil in our denom-
ination and il not healed must grow womh
and worse until tho pence and happiness of
many families unit far more ttian all of
many churches shall ba entirely deatroyel
and many individual mombors of our churchi s
shall be ccmjili v ly paralyzed and their in-
fluence for gonj destroyed and
Whereas If we know our own liearis it is
our desire our great desire that peace hap-
piness and prosperity and above all su-
preme lovo to G.kI to our Savior and to the
Comforter the Holy Spirit and brotherly
love may and shall abound among us for the
Lord Ji sus Christ's sake. And
Whores Our beloved brother 1W. J.
B. Link i'i tho spirit of Christ and fir His
sake as wo believe has done al in his power
to remove every difficulty out of tho way
by asking fir and receiving a
letter of dismission fro u u-
which wo as Baptists looking to the word of
God and the timvhonored principles of mir
denomination do believe is all that wo could
do in his caso. And desiring as wo believe
to do all that tlio scriptures reason and the
peace our beloved Zinn requires at our bnnds
to settle these difficulties and remove them
out of the wav; therefore

store to fellowship in this church any and all
those from who'n ah withdrew fellowship

memorial and declaration and disfollowship

with us all ot which we will understand as
fully done on their presenting themselves to
tho church or sending their names to the
clerk of tins church for that purpose; and
further that to any and all of thoao thus re-
turning and wishing letters of dismission to
organi. i another church in Dallas tho clerk
is Imroiiy Huthoruv-d to furnish such letters.
K 'solved second. That wo do hereby
distinctly and positively deny that this
church over denied to any member "the right
of trial and investigation beforo the entire

of the way so far as possible the resolution
offered by V. A. Grilfeth proposing a c mi-

brethren Link and i)u;knr and ed'ect a re-
conciliation which resolution was adopd
November 19:h 1879. And further in
relation to all those presenting themselves
to this church or the r names to the cleik. hs
hereinbefore indicated this resolution and
erory act and resolution of this church from
and after this relating in any wsy to those
who accent our proposition and so far as fioy
are oncerned shall ba aud the same is here-
by rescinded and expunged from our ohiirnh
baoks without their giving any explanation
or the withdrawal of ar ything on their part
except as above required in tho first reiolu-
ti.ro. Kesolved That as we cannot accept the
propositions proaoatod to us by the bre hren

that we in declining subaiit the foregoing
for their consideration.

ence assembled.

The Rare.
It ij pretty well known throughout the
city that there will be racing over the fair
ground's course during next week. The
idea of having races hero this fall was acted
upon hastily and the arrangements for the
success of tbe occasion are not as elaborate
as they would have been had more time
been taken but as it is proposed to form a
regular jockey club with charter etc.
and have spring and fall races
every year heroat'ior it was deemed
advisable to take tLe initiative at once. Tbe
gentlemen instrumental in getting up the
races tor next week only ask subscriptions
to the amount of $000 from the citizens of
the city as they feel assured that the sale of
privileges and gale money will supply the
balance necessary and pay tho expenses in-
curred. The committee soliciting subscrip-
tions have mot with fair encouragement aud
success so fur. . The track is given flee and
has boon put in order by a few gentlemen so
that all in Ids particular is in readiness.
Jocky club racing for purses is a sport in
itselt innocent and that in ets with tho
hearty approval and eudorsoment of the bet-
ter classes everywhere. The first gent'emon
in every country engairo i i it and by their
encouragement countonance and participa
tion elevate mo sport to a g"itool amuse-
ment free from the tricks aad frauds
peculiar to mere gambling schemes where
the unwary aud uninitiated are at the mercy
of fie sharpers. This species of speed con-
tests encourages too tho improvement
of hor.-e. stock and loads to the breeding of
pure thoroughbred animals and the devel-
opment of the horse to the bighost state of
perfection. F.r centuries tho horso has
been man s mo t faithful most serviceable
domestic animal and hi.s added no little to
the advancement of tho world in civilization
and in material prosperity. In Holy Writ
the war-horse is spoken ot as smelling the
battle from afar and in every decisive bat-
tle between nations in every age the horse
has played a conspicuous pin t. Horse-racing
dales back to the times of the early
Greeks and Komans who were devoted to
the patime. B iginuing with the reign of
Charles I. in Kngland horse-racing has been
a favorite amusement of royalty and of
the nobility in that country uttil now the
stakes run for each yoar at the different
meetings aggregate in nionov and plate
$1000000. The thoroughbred horso of this
day owes his origin to tbe barbs of the
Mo irs whonco they got their Ueetness
and the high-mettled coursers of tho Arabs
from which they get their bottom and game.
Full of courage and with an intelligence
that is marvellous the rac-horse naturally
endears himself to man and excites an ad-
miration that borders on enthusiasn. tfince
tho day that Surena at the head of bis Par-
thian hordes encircled the beleagiircd legions
of Crassus sweeping around and about the
doomed hosts of the 11 unau ox-triumvir on
the splendid chargers bestrode by his fierce
barbarians tho horso has figured in tho
world's history prominently has lived in
verse and has tilled many a page of romance.
livery city ot prominence in this country has
its race course and jockey club and its semi-
annual meetings and every yoar somo now
namo is added to tho list of this country's
noted racers. Why should Dallas b.) behind
in this matter? There are a numbur of gen-
tlemen in Texas devoting their attention to
the breeding of thoroughbred horses and
wo havo in our state some as highly bred ani-
mals as can b-s f iund in the world. There is
no section of this union b t-
ter adapted to the development
of the horso than Texas and
this line of stock-raising should bo encour-
aged and fostered. Dallas ought to hve
her Jockey club an I her races twice a year
in tho spriug and fall. The i it .ci:s of" this
city c'. at!' rdt i givo good puwa t.-r good
purses will bring noted and fast hois.-j here
and rioted and tal horses will bring to oach
ra'co meeting thcusauds of visitors who will
spend fiir mora money in the city than the
amount of the parses.
