The manufacture of leather in the Uuited
State ranks next to that cf agriculture io
importance conceding the amount of capi-
tal and labor employed in iu production.
The most complete statistics we have of our
leather indmtry was embodied in a report
made by David Wells revenue commission-
er in 1870.
That year the value of leather made in
theUnitoJ Sutoswis 5222000000 giving
employment to over 30000 hands.
The rates of increase over those figures
during the pa-t ten years has been corre-
spondingly as largo as any other industry in
this country.
From a very remote period hides of ani-
mals havo boon propared by various pro-
cesses for clothing and useful ornamental ar-
ticles. From the book of Exodus wa learn that
the anciont Hebrews ornamented leather by
giving it bright colors by dying ram skins
with red. The Egyptians used leather in
making vessels for holding water.
Notwithstanding the manufacture of
leather was known at an early poriod of the
world's history there was no allowance
ma le in improving tho process of its man-
ufacture until about the closo of tho past
and beginning of tho 'present century.
Without enumerating tho various processos
employed at ditlerent epochs it may bo woll
to notice that the most successful chemical
changes that has brought about tho present
advance in tanning is attributed to using
hemlock and bark obtained from oak
trees.
In England and Germany sawdust from
these substances is now being used with gre it
success in tanning.
The Uuited States to day is the most ex-
tensive; leather prod icing nation upon tho
fce of the globe especially in the best quali-
ties of sole leather upper leather and harness
leather.
Tho export of sole leathor has within the
past few yen's become largor than all the
imports of the various foreign leathers com-
bined it being conceded by Europoan man-
ufacturers to bo far superior in quality to
anv thoy are enabled to prod ice.
The tanners of this country especially
those located near the groat grazing parks
of Colorado Wyoming and Now Mexico
and tho immense pasture fluids of Texas
Kansas and Nebraska from which uro ob-
tained the best hides for sole upper and
harness 1 atlior in the world.
The iimnenso herds of cuttle upon these
prairies Bud a market in 8u Louis Chicago
and Cincinnati where a large por cent are
slaughtered to simply tho necessary domarui
for l'p.'sh beef in Europe as well as tho man-
ufacturing cities upon the Atlantic coast.
The great tanneries located trib-
utary to theso commercial cities
are enabled to purchase the
hides for loss money than Uey would cost
the cistern tanners and are consequently
enabled to produce tho best quality of leath-
er for less inonoy. Tne freight charges up-
on the hides to the east and upon tho leath-
er wost is a clea.- gain to tho western con
sumor who purchases from w stern jobbing
houses.
Tho avorage number of hides convorted
' into leather now exceed 7000000 annually
in tho United States.
Leeds Manchester and Xewon"tla are
recognized as tho principal leather markets
of Great Britain while Boston and Now
York havo hold the prestige for many years
in this country.
The ertatilishin' of immenso tanneries
west ot tho Allegheny mnuniinnB within
reach of the linest ipialitvof b.irk for tanning
purposes and at the heall of the hide market
have contributed largely of late years in
making St. Louis and other western com-
mercial centeis tho groat distributing leather
depots.
The wholesale leather dealers in these
western cities aro inclined to supply the slu e-
makers harnes;mnkers and manufacturers of
belting hoes etc. with tho best quality of
leather such as so'e upper and harness for
less money than '.ho eastern joaber can pos-
sibly do.
The wholosalo leathor house of James
Clark & Co. of St. Louis established in
1810 has contributed largely in centraliz-
ing tbe leather trado of tho west at this groat
commercial centre boing nearer the groat
states of Texas Kansas und othorstates south
and west of the .Missouri.
Messrs. Clark & Co. have during a suc-
cessful commercial caroor of furty years built
up a lurgo trade throughout the south and
west. They carry the mostextm sive stock of
all kinds of leather oither of domestic or
foreign manufacture to be f. und in any
similar establishment in the United Stales.
With a practical experience and ac-
?uaintance with the tanneries of our country
or !orty years and familiar with the imports
and tho character of tho various leathers of
F r . i i ..
lureign inamiiaciuro mcy uavo a prestige
enjoyed but by few leather houses in our
country. The average annual sales of this
houso now exceed $700000 an evidence of
the cotilliepce secured from the trad
throughout the southern and western states.
Their trudo in T.-ihs has been correspond-
ingly increased in rates with our increa"e o'
mmufaotuers of boots and shoesharnessbelt-
ing and others using leather.
Their otHce Is located at 418 and 420 north
Main strovt St. Louis Mo. to which address
all letters of enquiry or orders will receive
prompt attention.
Theirorder trado being ono of much im-
portanco and magnitude and in buying their
alec!; exclusively for cash thoy aro enabled to
supply their trade at correspondingly low
figures.
