Yesterday between the hourt of 11 and 12
o'clock crowds of vehicles carriages bug-
gies omnibuses etc. filled with ladiet and
gentlemen might luve been teen proceeding
out Main and Commerce streets toward
Browder spring. to witness the ceremonies
of Inaugurating the construction enterprise
of the "en to Mexico" march. Arrived upon
the ground hollow square was formed
when Mr. K. G. Wright of Chicago opened
the order of exercises by delivering the fol-
lowing address to the president directors and
Erojectors of the Chicago Texas fc Mexlcsn
entral railroad company and to the mayor
nd citizens of Dallas I
We have met here to-day on this spot te
inaugurate a beginning long looked tor and
long hope! for. It is befitting me to say t
this time we are here to witness the com-
mencement of a work in which every citizen
of Dallas every citizen ot the Lone Star
state ot Texas every citizen of the United
Slates and every citizen of the world is more
or lets interested; for any enterprise that
servos at meant of developing the soil bene-
fits the entire world. That we may proceed
directly to the evidences of our purpose I
shall introduce to you a gentleman who
came into your state not many
months ago nn entire stranger with rod
chain and compass In baud and with his
little band of faithful associates has trav-
ersed through valleys and over hills in your
state with manv davs of inuloment weather.
lie has set bit compass and drawn hit stakes
on various lines over 800 miles and recon-
noiterod over 1000 miles of the line. It has
been my pleasure to accompany bim over
portions of that line twice for tome 60
miles southwest of this city and I pledge
you my honor that in his zeal and enthu-
siasm bo has convinced me that every acre
of land properly utilizod would produce a
fortune; that every tree and shrub in the
' Blaie U grafted would produce good fruit
and that every spring and rivulet by which
the Chicago Texas & Mexican railway shall
run contains the elixir of etornal life. I
now have the pleasure of introducing George
W Waits tho chief engineer of itiit rail-
road and ask him to turn over the maps and
surveys to tar at ibey are ready to the
president. .
Mr. Waite responding expressed hit thanks
for and high appreciation of tho very com-
plimentary torms in which the president had
made reference to bis and his assnulatni'
labors skill and fidelity and said that he
now too great pleasure In transferring the
Diners called for to the com nan v. Hi
not a man of words but his work was thore
to tpeak for him and bis confreres. And
well indeed could he afford to take this nml-
tion for Mr. Waite has produced a pieco of
tamoo. worn mat any engineer would have
the right to fuel proud of.
President Uale then opened by remarking
that the survey of the line of the Chicago
Texas & Mexican railroad from here south-
Wast for a distance of twenty-seven miles
having been surveyed and in ruadiness for the
contractors who bad bt en awarded nearly a
woek ago the construction work would now
be begun. lie thankod the engineer and his
associates for the masterly and prompt man-
ner in which thoy bad effected the charge
committed to their department; ho thanked
the people of this city and of those along the
line of the road for the support and co-
operation thoy had extendod; tpokoof the
immense beoefiu which must aorue to this
metropolis ot the southwest by connection
with the great motropolit of the northwest
Chicago by a d through this contemp'atod
road; expressed himself at truly happy to
believe that to toon now would the infusion
of northwestern enterprise and vim be in

Texts lie rrnarlcod that he as presided
of this road had thus bogun the great work
of his life and that ho proposed aJhnring to
it until flaal completion his lifo and health
being the only qualifying conditions.
When Mr. Hale had conoludod Mayor
Goad wat ctlled upon aud in a few brief
expressive remarks delivered in earnest
eloquent and Impressive manner he con-
gratulated the officers of this enterprise for
the progress thoy had thus far made and for
the bright prospects that glowel for their
future lie congratulated the citizens of
Dallas and indeed of tho sttto.becauto of the
grand results which wore to flow from the
completion of this grand ooncnptloa. The
people ot this fiction had perhaps extonde I
but a hal'-hearted support to it not for lack
ofconQlonce In tuoo who had had charge of
ltbut beotuseof recent failiims in si.nilar be-
ginnings in our midst. But now all felt that
tne good work had been bogun and would be
pushed to fruition lie williod the good
work God speed.
Colonel J. It. Simpson being then called
upon responded substantially as lo'.lows :
