tions of the a;;e in the shape of the uni-
versal lllirctto a mat him- which instantane-
ously translates any langusw Into any
other noiselessly aiul with. the utmost pre-
cision. The universal libretto is designed
chielly for use with Italian opera com-
luinlvs or actors pluyiiu; in foreign
tongue such as Sarah llernhardt
or r-aivini or Feohter. It is a ma-
chine placed beneath the proscenium boxen
anil manipulated by the leader of the
orchestra anil follows with photoirrnphic
tirecision the words spoken on the stae
mt rendering Uiein in the iiliom of the
audience. It w ill work no mattor what
the lancuaite may he. Kvon (Tiiuese can
by this medium be instantly turneil into
the vernacular. At fust glance the above
statement appear to bo simply absurd hut
vet the Invention is a practical one. and will
do what the inventor claims. A reporter th is
morning went up to Mr. Jones's otllce in
tho Jaecnrd huildiiiir and was ahowu the
libretto by the 'old nontlcinan. .At first
jrlanreone notices a muulier of con-wheels
and clock-work at ono and of the machine
which is a loii tlat tin hot net upon end
with a sheet of linen in trout behind which
und imiiie tlie box ahinip is hurtling. The
principle upon which tiie machine works is
simply the magic lantern one. A screen
upon which the' libretto has heun written iu
large letters is passed in front of a cal-
cium light which is consequently visible
to every one iu the theatre. Two of thuse
illuminated librettos are to be used with
each prcformance placed in front of the
proscenium boxes mi ciicti aide id' the stage.
Tliey will be visible from every part of tho
theatre. The scroll is run up by water
power arid the shadow of a wire behind the
sheet indicates tho exact lino which the
tu tor or singer is then cmnmcd upon. The
niMchincrv is fill I v under I be control of the
leader of the orchestra. The advantage of
the new scheme is that it does away with
the old libretto entirely instead of as now
having to keep one eye filled on thti stage
and the other on the pamphlet in one's lap.
It will only be necessary to turn the eyes
to tho side of'tlii'stago upon w hich the ac-
tor is standing to see an illuminated trans-
lation of tho few remarks which are bsing

the position that the shares of stock in a
