PaRNKLL AND IRELAND.
Patriotism or something else has alwavs
boiled over in Ireland about three times In
a century and the present agitation is
merely a periodical attack. O'Connctl led
the way not many years since anil had to
he taught reason by force. But O'Counell
was far different from I'arnell. lie was a
wonderful orator and possessed some views
almost broad enough to be culled states-
manship. I'arnell is nothing a blatant
demagogue with brains enough to excite
but not to control an ignorant audience. It
cannot be disputed but that Ireland is not
a favored country. The wrongs endured by
her citizenship are Iwvond question real
and actual. Hut the lunil bill was the great-
est concession to the wishes of a capricious
populace ever made by a government. If
the Irishmen choose to niish its irelierous
propositions aside for the foolish jmrposc of
tuiucuiug uienisuivcs to a political auven-
turer like Tumuli they ut once sacrifice all
the sympathy that humanity can have lor
their condition. Terrell ritar.
TO COXTUST THE STATE UNIVKKSITV KLkVtlJK.
The governor and secret iry of stale have
acted upon their construction of the law by
declaring Austin to be elected fur the loca-
tion of tlie main branch of the state univer-
sity. This result was arrived ut by milling
together the .votes cast for Austin for the
entire university and for the main branch.
Trior to the election the attorney-general
rendered an opinion adverse to the position
tuken by the governor and secretary of
stntj tn winch he argued very lorcibly that
vot-.-s cast for Austin or any other place lor
the location of the entire university could
nut bo counted for the main branch. In
our opinion this is the proper view of the
matter being in iieconlunce with I lie spirit
it not the strict letter of the law. As Tyler
would bo elected by a separate countshe
will; probably cunte.l tlie election or test
tho question before the courts in some man-
ner. We hope so at least. ttirconville

W'v have received I'mm the publishers
11 C ipyof tloveinor Huberts' book on Texas.
AI'L'i' a somewhat careful ami laborious
reading our impression is one of astonish
inent that a 1:1:111 of (iovcrnor Huberts'
ulle'cd ability would claim authorship of a
boo!; so dull und stupid. Tiie "lleseriptiou
of Texas" consists of n little more than
thumb-worn generalities which have been
better said time and again by the press of
the state. The book contains scarcely liny
statistical information of value and the
style is prosy and tiresome in the extreme.
The illustrations are 'simply abominable
both tn design and execution. It is well
for (Iovcrnor Huberts that his ability lias
been attosttd by so many years of useful-
ness the publication of such a book would
be a fatal blow to one less lirnily estab-
lished in public confidence. (iainusvillo

Kaufman is soon to indulge in one of
those delightful sensations known as mu-
nicipal elections. Preparations are now
going on for tlie feast ol voting and when
the day arrives our city will put on lis
shining metropolitan robe and step proud-
ly into the ranks of the prosperous and
growing cities of .Texas. We arc having
most "too much glorv for one year." How-
ever let us stand it. 1et us not become in-
toxicated with our new-born glory and suc-
cess and "hand our brains down stairs in an
empty bottle." We certainly have been
generous and Jwhen people "are generous
they always b( co ne great. We shall recur
to this matter again but must say right
here that the idea of Kaufman becoming a
municipality was horn of the right kind of
spirit and we trust will result in a glorious
triumph and general benelil of all our in-
terests. Kaufman Hun.

The public clamor against the council for
appropriating the sum of $'0uu to make our
public streets passable and preventing por-
tions of the city from inundating has well-
nigh ceased. Indeed so great Is the change
in public sentiment that if u vote could tie
had to-day on the street improvement ques-
tions sinco the important work on North
Main avenue has progressed so far and Worth
street already shows so significantly what
thut thoroughfare will be in another month
we believe the majority for the immediate
Improvement of all the streets would be

predicted and it exhibits the good sense
and discretion of the vast body of citizens.

joice that our city is demonstrating its
