Cattle raising in Iowa ia becoming one of
tho most profitable and extenstvo indus-
tries in the State. The prairies which arc
well watered with clear and never-fuilinjr
streams all'ord pasturage nnsurnasscd in
richness and extent. Tho grass known as
the blue joint said to be as good as the cul-
tivated varieties crows with great luxu-
riance in the valley bottoms tnul can be
had in unlimited quantity merely for the
expense of cutting and curing. W'ithin tho
last decade there has been great emulation
among farmers on the subject of improving
the breed ol their stock and tho most cele-
brated herds of New York Illinois and
Kentucky have been put umlcrcotitribulion
lor this purpose. The result of all this has
been that Iowa possesses some of the 11 nest
herds in the world. It is not generally
knenvn that the lirst direct shipment of live
stock from Chicago to Kngland was of Jowa
